starting out as a band

hi guys, im just curious to know how do your bands get started. i mean like after you got all the neccessary people you want, how do you get together to practice when starting off and put everyone in place, and make the music sound good?does it take long?

get everyone to learn and love their own instrument

have a general vision and direction for the band in mind

be willing to fork out long hours/days to practice or even to perfect your favourite songs

when y'all are ready go for gigs/competitions

and lastly ...
GET SIGNED !

and never forget to stay true to your music

first of all, have all your band members do their part by learning (be it self-taught or lessons).

once you're all more or less comfortable with your equipment and have the fundamentals right, you can start playing songs. pick a song, and have your band members learn their parts before jamming together. this is very important. make sure they learn their parts well before jamming or else it'd be a complete waste of time.

once you guys have learned the song by heart, and know the song really well, get together and jam. it is very important that all the members know the song really well or it could lead to a lot of arguing and disharmony.
practice the song long enough that every member knows exactly when to play what and can synchronize. it would sound terrible if there was a pause, and your guitarist continues playing while all the rest stop. (get the idea?)

remember to start with something simple. you can look into playing songs by blink 182 and green day.

as you continue jamming and picking up the instruments on your part, the difficulty of the songs played will increase over time. this is when your band should try playing songs of different genres to expose your band to different types of music. this eventually helps when you're writing originals.

over time, you and your band will (hopefully) find a genre that you ALL like to play. it is a MUST for bands to have a same common interest and direction in order for the band to progress further.
once the common interest/direction is set, and your skills have greatly improved, you can start writing originals. this is where exposing yourself to different genres help. with the exposure that you have, you can add in little bits and pieces gathered across the genres to give your music a special twist.

and the list carries on... you go for gigs, recognition, make it big, die a rockstar blah blah...

all this will take a long time. improving and growing as a band doesn't happen overnight. be sure never to leave your band on impulse. you should only leave your band when there are MAJOR differences that AFFECT YOUR PLAYING that CANNOT BE RESOLVED.

oh do note that throughout this process, you should spend time to gel with your band. your band would progress a lot more if you were more than just a band. be friends with each other. a band isn't just about the music. it's about the company as well.

hope that helps

for me personally, the quoted is especially important. start with something simple, just to get used to each other, after than, tighten up.

everything else, i agree with what bigblackbear has said.

common interest and direction. if the singer loves stuff like pop punk, the guitarist loves metal, the bassist loves jazz and the drummer, erm whatever lah.. the band can get along for the first few jams.. no problem, anyone can always compromise. but if they intend to go on long term there will definitely be disagreements in musical directions.

imo thats the most impt factor.

:)

it's actually nothing much.. juz remember nv to think too much.. do it for the love of music.. then soon though music u can get to know each other more.. develop friendship.. (deep friendship) as long goes by u'll work hard not for urself but for them too.. like me.. i always try to perfect my vocals.. play better acoustic guitar and write better songs.. not juz for myself.. but for them too.. having this mindset keeps u guys together.. and no matter what dun give up ur dream..

P.S: i got to know my members thought soft.com too except for my bassist.. so .. it's possible to play music with strangers and get used to each other. :)

all the best!

everything above. all true.
once you get to writing originals, be sure to have discipline. in every little things, even down to being punctual for sessions. it might be a simple song, but one person cock up, all cock up. simple song cant play together, dun even think of boasting to your girl friends (just a popular example, not being sexist) and bring them for jamming sessions to watch your band act like a bunch of fools. anyway, these extras will only distract you so why bother.
practice/compose at home, discuss with ur members and give them a brief idea of what theyre going to expect, then pick up the phone and book your preferred studio. dun waste money to compose in the studio. ive witnessed so many kids doing so just wasting their parents money and their time. might as well catch a movie or play lan.
have the right attitude to compose/edit your music. you might have come up with the song, but let the other members give opinions and be open minded. there shouldnt be any ego in the room. this part is difficult. it really takes maturity. i cant explain it anymore than that.
there's no formula in music making (unless its verse chorus verse chorus bridge BREAKDOWN JUNJUNJUNJUNJUN~ in every song HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA). ironically, it requires chemistry.
these are the first few things that pops up in mind. do add on. if ure serious, these might be the most important points.

still okay lah.. got afew bands out there whose members are of very different interests that are good.

but yeah, afew only ah.

AAAAND... if any of your members is the kind that favours hos over bros, or in malay we call it NONOK, dun waste time, just sack him even if he's a guitar hero.
