Stage/gig vocals VS Karaoke

Just a curious question, I'm quite keen to hear everyone's thoughts on this..

What are the differences between the two of the vocal performances? Singing-wise, they are different but how different are they?

Can a horrible singer be completely masked by the wonders of karaoke? I don't think so.. cos I've heard really bad karaoke singers lol. If normal (pop/stage) singing requires stamina, character to talk to the crowd, confidence, etc, what's the forte for karaoke singing? Technique and hitting the right parts at the right time?

Is there something involved, cos sometimes I hear those chinese amah karaoke singings and i know i can't sing like that lolz......... and I've heard really REALLY good karaoke singers who sound better than the original singers sometimes but their voices are completely different on and off the karaoke mic..

How about showmanship? Is it easier and more relaxing and less nerve-wrecking to sing in the dark pub and hide your jig or easier to have the freedom of expressing yourself out in the open?

How abt added "mic" help? What are the differences between karaoke mics and normal mics?

Lastly, from people who start off karaoke before going into stage gigs, was it a nice experience or scary experience? Some of my friends say that they go into karaoke to build their confidence and 'practice' before their gigs, but I think it's quite different, is it?

Does karaoke really help prepare people for stage gigs or is it just for fun?

Tell me what you guys think :}
My karaoke experiences are very forgettable since it was usually accompanied by mugs and mugs and mugs........... so I can't quite remember the sensation enough to give an idea :P

Maybe someone can suggest a good place to karaoke? LOL haven't been for one in years...

Honestly, singing for a minus one, karaoke, band, etc. is quite similar. The difference of singing in a band, you'll hear all the musical instruments being played live and if the players played their instruments lounder than usual or mistake it'll definitely affect the singer for this case. Sometimes you'd ad lib more than usual depending on situation.

Singing with a minus one or karaoke are straight forward. Looking at the screen for the lyrics are just the norm. I'd say you're more relax in a situation where you are not performing but enterting yourself with friends. The mics at most karaoke lounge are normally filled with too many reverb or echo. The effect can mask those not so good singers to sound reasonable. Worst come to worst the singers can blame the KJ for not adjusting the mics properly. Hehehe! Since people are also aware that the KJ are not qualified sound engineers, so it's not something new if the voice is lounder than the music or vice-versa. The just hantam only lah. Some KJ's are good in sound but due to the nature of their job they also hantam lah. But will sound different to his favourite regulars or friends.

Singing live with a band you may not have everything like delay, reverb, etc. effect on the system. And as I've said earlier, if the band can't balance the sound the singer will be screaming even to a ballad song when playing raw.

Hi sage,
if you were looking at really practising your singing, a karaoke room is definitely not the place to be. One, the reverb is usually way too high for you to listen to your vocal technique or control, especially for your sustained notes. Two, the sound quality would not be good enough for you to listen and understand your true vocal quality. Three, it would be too noisy for you to even monitor your own singing!

Karaoke is, and always has been, a place for you to relax and sing for the fun of it. ;-p

Unless of course, you are seeking to build up your confidence when singing, then please do sing karaoke and do it in front of your friends, or even do it in a big hall with complete strangers! But definitely brush up on yr singing and make sure it's ok first before you do that, or else many ears may suffer....

Hi, for me there is a big big big difference between singing k n on stage.

I just list down the point differences i noe of

Good pts
Karaoke is a place for u to learn n memorise lyrics, repetative practise (without asking a band to repeat)n the proper techniques to over come difficult parts. Also practise on proper rythem, proper vol control etc

On live bands - you practise coordination, teamwork among each player, practise standing n singing in front of ppl, ur staging skills. You can also add in ur own creativity in singing, as well as the music. More expressions can be done freely n etc

Bad pts
So during karaoke sessions, its hard to imagine urself singing on stage. the minus 1 for karaokes are fixed, the tempo, chords, arrangement.

In Bands their bad pts are just the good pts of karaoke they cant achieve. For me if i were to practise with a band, I cant practise pitching, lyrics as compared to karaoke ( u can turn on the singer's voice n pick up any songs fast)

The best environment is to sing in a karaoke with a stage for u to perform as though in front of a crowd, to improve showmanship (some outlets main halls haf tat), and practise with a band if you want to improve your singing quality be it vocal pitch, color. Because singing live with unplugged, its very easy to make n spot mistakes, therefor helping improvements faster...

hi sage personally i`ve sang in ktvs and pubs for a long time.. but i feel the difference in live band and singing in a ktv is that when you sing in a live band the music follows the way you sing..thus giving you more room to express the song =) but in the ktv all songs are fixed to the originals and you have to sing with the music .

about the part on singing in ktvs before going to gigs i agree on that ^^ i usually sing the same old song lots and lots of times in a ktv before i go to a pub to sing =) it helps u get used to the song and you can make sure u can hit all notes ^^ in the ktv u wont lose face if u cant hit ma haha. and if you know how to adjust u can actually adjust the mic to the standard and not having too much echo , tremble or bass. try it out it helps but try not ta drink when u go there though lol you`ll forget all the things you`ve learnt haha.
