Music by the great composers – Bizet, Brahms and Beethoven - will be in the air at Toa Payoh Central as the SSO returns for a free outdoor concert on March 21.
The SSO will also perform at the Nanyang Technological University on March 20. The soloist for both concerts is talented homegrown violinist Seah Huan Yuh, who will take on the exciting solo part in Brahms’ Hungarian Dances Nos. 2 & 5 as well as Carlos Gardel’s Por Una Cabeza. Both performances are sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings as part of the SPH Gift of Music series.
Conducting the SSO for both concerts is the SSO Young Associate Conductor Darrell Ang. Ang is the winner of several prestigious international competitions: the 2006 Antonio Pedrotti International Competition for Orchestra Conductors, the 50th International Besancon Competition for Young Conductors in 2007 as well as the 2008 Toscanini Orchestral Conducting Competition.
For the performance at NTU, the SSO will also perform the first movement from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 – its first five bars being probably the most famous musical motif ever written – and the grand and euphoric finale of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’.
And at Toa Payoh, residents can look forward to hearing well-loved and familiar excerpts from the opera Carmen as well as Dance of the Yao People, a lively and festive number.
As Singapore’s national orchestra, a key aspect of the SSO’s mission is to keep the music playing, in both good times and bad. To reach out to Singaporeans from all walks of life, the SSO regularly gives free performances at polytechnics and universities as well as various outdoor platforms including the HDB heartlands.
