Hi guys, am wondering what is the difference between ibanez SR500 and SR700? From the ibanez website, it seems like they are identical except for looks, and body.
SR500 is mahogany, 700 is Figured Maple/Mahogany wing body w/Maple.

I've had the chance to try the sr500 and i loved it, but no chance yet to try the 700.

i think it is just looks and body. but i think in this case the diff in tone due to body woods will be very subtle. both use barts and the same preamp is it?

Yupp, both bart pickups. by preamp do you mean the EQ on the guitar? if yes then, yes, same for both.

Price diff from BGW: 500 costs $100 less.

By the way I'm looking to move into a mid range guitar, so any recommendations will be welcomed! I play mostly rock, prefer bright and punchy sound... and for the occasional ballads.. warm and round.

was wondering if any of you have any experience with bass guitars with unfinished bodies? errrrr like, no lacquer etc on the wood. can see and feel the grains etc.. I'm thinking of getting the sr500 and the body is like this. Am wondering if it's a wise buy as I'm not sure how it will hold up in the Singapore climate...

here's a picture of it.

It's a huge maintainence issue if you want it to look good.

basically, the open pores of the unfinished wood will absorb your sweat when you play. This will cause the guitar body to change color at the parts that are touching your body.

In order to prevent this it requires you to constantly wax the guitar body once every two weeks.

personally, this kind of maintainence is a pretty ridiculous concept to me.

I'd rather just buy a guitar with a finished body, and avoid this issue totally. I'm already busy as it is, why get a guitar that adds extra time requirement for nothing.

Hmmm.. making me seriously reconsider this.

does anyone know of any good luthiers etc that can apply lacquer/coating to this?

The body in the pic is finished. They just did not fill the grain. It will hold up in Singapore's climate, not to worry. Its not the high gloss lacquer finish you are thinking of, but its a finish nonetheless.

Ah.... ok thanks alot :) I did not know this was possible :$ did a google on filling the grain and turns out there's a huge area of knowledge there i never knew. thanks once again :)

there is a final, very thin lacquer overcoat for this body but it's not the regular gloss type. my Ibanez S540 sports this finish type which the manufacturer refers to as stained oil:

there was no waxing or other buffing job done for this guitar since i bought it in 1999. i would give it a wood conditioning overcoat occasionally. there were no adverse reactions to the climate as well.
