Spectrum of Music Listening

Have you ever shown someone a particular song that you like, and they answered that "it's not selleable", or "i don't like it!!" or "i cannot understand"??
Have you ever heard a song that many people listen to and they all said it's very new music or very original stuff, but when you listen to it, you feel there ain't anything special about it at all??
Have you ever wondered why people can be so nostalgic about commercial songs and every radio station seems to be playing them, and you are listening to something more underground and different that you feel your music taste cannot be understood and you feel you are too different in personality than everyone else and you ask the question, "what's wrong with me, am i worse off then others??"
I came up to a conclusion that the whole issue lies in what i call "Music Spectrum of Listening"..
The theory is not something i thought off myself, but more and more i see how true it actually is!!!
Commercial stuff is what most people are already acquainted to, as a person listen deeper into a particular genre, they start to learn new music along that line.
Example is this for rock:
Pop Rock -> Alternative -> Punk/Grunge -> Hard Rock -> Soft Metal -> Heavy Metal -> Thrash Metal -> Death Metal

Example is this for Dance:
Commercial Dance -> Eurodance -> Para Para -> House -> Progressive Trance -> Techno/Trance -> Hard Techno or Trance -> Psy/Goa Trance -> Dark Trance

Of course this is a simple analogy, there are many cross links. Some people stay at one point and never move deeper. The truth is that you are not very different or weird compared to the common people, it's just that the chain in the spectrum you have walked and focused have progress to a point that the common crowd cannot understand or simply never walked before. That spells out the difference in opinions.....

Do give me some feedback on these!!! Maybe you can plot more chains you can see for other types of music, or maybe a different perspective compared to the chain examples i gave above... Maybe do share out the flow of genres you have gone through in your life....
It's like one door opening to another door, ain't it??

sometimes it can be the "normal consumer" listens to what the majority listens to. like how I knew someone who was an "anarcho punk" listenin to all that ramones/sex pistols/acab or whatever punk stuff cos it was the "in thing" with his friends. then suddenly emo was the trend, he stopped the mohawk and leather/studs/spikes and put on army thick black frame glasses and comb his hair flat side parting wearing sweaters with collar shirts inside cos that was the in thing after. now it's "mascara" core and he wears guess-the-obvious and screamos around and lately I see him at Ministry Of Sound wearing the "Topman" shirts/pants listenin to trance/house. guess what, you're not normal. hahah.

but stickin to your topic,I used to listen to 80s,90s pop (madonna/cyndi lauper/depeche mode/richard marx bla bla) as a kid, then electronica/trance cos my friends were hackers and that's the "el33t" music. then greenday/offspring (punkrock) after I started hangin out with band guys. then that time the trend was ska. but ska (only) didn't appeal as much, so i had to "chain link down the line" like you said, so Skapunk, then Emopunk , then metalpunk, then I stopped. within these "punk" range. but I still stick to my so-called-roots - "electronica/trance" . just to listen and relax. cos I record punkrock bands often can get sickening..
