Speaker dilemma

hey guys,
i currently use a 50 watt head with a 2x12 marshall cab with celestion 75s.
I want to change the 75s for 25's or 30's because i feel like im not pushing the speakers enough so my sound is quite muddy or boomy. When i can really turn up the amps output they sound better, but at bedroom(where i mostly practice) level they sound quite shit.

Would swapping them for 25 or 35s help clear up the sound at bedroom level, or would the change only make a hardly noticeable difference?

thanks for your help ppl.

hm. get a practice amp so that it sounds good at lower levels. rather than buying new speakers. vox pathfinder 15r or smth like that.

hmm downgrading from say a 50 watt head and 2x12 to a vox path finder... i think i would rather chop off my fingers... 8O hahaha...

this looks like a question for Edmund.. hes got a 50 watt tube head.. with 2x12...

ive got a 5150 60watter... 2x12 and i didnt find it muddy at all - as long as it was past 1-2 ... anything below is just not gd enuf.

I was about to answer this but I thought I would be too inexperienced to give you a good opinion on changing speakers.

If your cab is closedback, try taking the back panel off if it's removable. See if you can reduce the bass. If it does, find a percentage of cover where you can balance the bass to your tastes, then cover partially or something.

If you can bring yout amp head around, try out other cabs and speakers and see which one works.

I am assuming the the amp you have is a JCM 800? A 50 watt amp will produce 100 watts when going flat out and distorting like hell, hence the use of two 75 wat speakers (for a consevative 150 watts). The greenbacks are 25 watt speakers and the classic 30's are 60 watt speakers (no idea why they called them classic 30s).

If you want a pair of UK made greenbacks, I have some at my house in Singapore that I can sell you for $250 for the pair, but the problem sounds more like the amp than the speakers, so try replacing the preamp tubes first and see if this improves the tone. Just change the first preamp tubetube on the right (when looking from the rear of the amp) and see if the sound improves. If it does, then retube the whole amp and rebias.

The amps tend to sound bassy and boomy when the tubes are getting old. When did you retube the amp last? I always ddo this when I buy an amp as I don't believe that the person who I bought it from looked after it.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Mark.

:)

do u guys know where can i just get 4 celestion V-30's ? just to swap with my 5150 cabs speaker ? i'm very eager to either change them or sell them away ...

I think you might want to try selling your current cab and getting the Carvin Vintage 2x12 extension cab. Comes loaded with V30s, safer than if you were to ship speakers alone I think, since you can get off Ranking by pre-ordering.
