Sound difference from audience & yourself?

Hello drummers

need some advice from u all..i am a newbie drummer here...i want to know when u all play drum, is it true that the sound that u hear when u sitting down there playing hitting the bass drum,snare,tom tom etc is it sound difference from those ears of audiences or other band members? Especially bass drum..the sound from the bass drum face the other direction. I am talking about those jammingh without monitor speakers.

Becos if that the case i really cant hear the drum bass i want to hear. Every week i go studio jamming, the same drum always sound difference every week. I can only tell when my bandmate said your bass sound awful. Any idea what is the ideal(good enough for normal pop rock band) sound for drum bass? My bandmate cant describe the sound that they want. They just only comment yours dont sound good, it awful. What shall i do drummers? Pls help me..thanks a lot.

listen to recordings and use that as a guide first, taking note that it is impossible to get the exact same sound from your drums, because there will be stuff like the mixing, and the instruments will cover up some of the ringing etc. after that it is personal preference and experimentation.

the same drum probably sounds different because you're not the only one using the drums in the studio - other people have come and played. The playing may have changed the tuning, or the people may have tried to tune the drums.

yes, the sound will be different to the audience members, but more so to those further away. i read somewhere that when at a gig you may want to get someone to play for you and stand 10m away to see what it sounds like.

perhaps try to find if you are able to record drums as well. preferably with a band. it's a real eye-opener to how different the drums will sound, and just what will be lost due to the other instruments.
