Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum eX VS EMU 0404

but i was reading thru creative's site... the plat ex claims that it can do 24bit recording with 6in/6out and has asio driver too... thats why i cant make the rite decision ...

Isn't the 0404 a PCI card without a breakout box? In that case the plat ex is a better buy. The amps are situated in a breakout box away from internal noise. But, the audigy 2 plat ex are more of a test product for creative. They're superseded by the 2 ZS. Also i've never been able to do 24/96, but then i'm on the kx drivers which really pushes the latency down to about 5-10ms. If i had to make a choice i'd go with the plat ex as opposed to the 0404 especially since there are 2 midi ports on the plat ex.

If they cost the same then it'd be a no brainer but if not then i'd look more carefully at what each offers.

E-mu 0404 can record at 24/96

Audigy 2 plat ex can record at only 16/48

I'll take the 0404 over the Audigy.

hey yc_, where'd you get the plat ex info from?

oops, I may have been confused by all the creative model numbers

Audigy 2 ZS can record 24/96
Audigy Plat eX can record 16/48

there is No such model as Audigy 2 Plat eX. Specs from creative website.

No worries :) Their product line is a bit messy. But there really is a audigy 2 platinum ex. Its slightly higher specced than a plain audigy2 or audigy platinum ex. Remembering how creative tried to con everyone into the audigy 24bit recording specs, i'd still take their numbers with a pinch of salt.

Audigy 2 ZS can record 24/96 ?

This following are the specs given for Audigy 2 ZS

24-bit Digital-to-Analog conversion during playback with sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz in 7.1 mode and up to 192kHz in stereo mode

24-bit Analog to Digital conversion during recording in 8, 16 or 24-bit at sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz

The problem with Creative is their drivers. Its meant for gaming.
NOT recording.

THe E-mu series are much much better despite the comparison of specs between the Audigy and E-mu sample rates. The convertors are pointless without gd drivers.

Not necessarily. Audio cards that are specced like the plat ex 2 are not meant for just gaming. Really though i don't think the comparisons between an audigy2 plat ex and an emu 0404 is fair. A more fairer comparison would be the audiophile 2496 vs the emu0404.
At the moment i'm using the kx drivers which puts the latency down to 10ms. Not exactly burning down the house but it makes up for it with a breakout box ( extremely useful ) and 2 midi i/o. The 0404 only comes with a gangllia of connectors. Not exactly friendly.
Those with the SB emu10k1 and 10k2 cards should try those drivers out. They really do make a huge difference. There are even soft internal routing options to each and every asio input and access to the emu10kx dsp emvironment. You can code up your own effects like in reaktor, the parameters of which are automatable through midi. Also you can offload soundfont duties to either of the 2 onboard synths.

hmm..used to have Audigy 1, Maudio 2496 , hoontech Cport , and now EMU 1820m ....best one so far ..but pretty diffcult to understand compared to the previous few ..no time to really master it. But in terms of latency and internal routing capabilities..this one is freaking good

uses TFPro preamps which also happens to have the same engineer behind the orignal JoeMeeks, same ADAs as Protools flagship HD system at 1/3 of the price..

The Plat eX CAN do 24 bit recording...its a superb card for everything. I'm selling mine because it's not compatible with a 64-bit processor....

Actually I'd go for the EMU instead of the Audigy. As some people have said, the Audigy is specially made for gaming, and even though it can record in 24-bit, it doesn't mean it will sound good. A friend of mine had advised me against buying it for recording because of the horror stories he's heard from its users.
