Some questions...

Just asking for some advice...

1.Sometimes when I sing, I seem to be straining my voice, and I just get tired before finishing the whole song.
Am I singing the wrong way?

2.What is screaming actually? Is it the same as growling?
I've been wanting to scream like how Aoi of Ayabie does.
For example, in the song 'Kaeru no Kubiwa'.
How do I scream like him?

Please give me some advice~
Thank you!

I won't reply to 2 since I don't know much about screaming ..

But for 1, I want to share something I noticed. When I first started using "good vocal technique", I actually got tired very quickly. I could last maybe 1 or 2 songs, then my voice would simply stop functioning properly. It took some time to train the "right" muscles until they could last for longer.

But if you are singing with bad technique (and by bad I mean technique that either sounds bad or damages your body), then you will most likely feel strained and tired.

The difference that I noticed in myself is that I never felt strained when using good technique, although my voice did simply stop functioning (that is, I would simply not be able to sing well). So I got tired, but not strained :) The danger there is that after getting tired, I would often strain to compensate.

By "good technique" I mean a technique that feels relaxed, sounds nice, and allows me to put feeling into my voice.

It might help telling us what kinda song you sang. If its other that screamos, try doing scales and warming up first. Do easier songs first before you do a very straining song.

As to screaming, you should always look for the proper technique. It is something that is always overlooked and people always kill their voice that way.

:)

Oh I see...
Sankyuus! You did help me a lot!
Somehow I can't control my muscles and sang in the bad technique.xP

I sing songs by a JRock band called Ayabie.
From the sad ballads such as Atama ga Okashii to the upbeat ones like Cubic' [L/R] ock.
The song I found quite straining is Shikosahoko and Metamor Last Page.
But recently, it seems that I have somehow lost the technique to sing without straining, and got tired easily.
I don't really know how to scream, but I sorta wanna learn it, like how Aoi of Ayabie sings in Kaeru no Kubiwa and Hoozuki in "The Brilliant Parade" live.:p

By the way, Sankyuus!:D

ok i'm not a very "technical" person when it comes to vocals, so yeah things like muscles etc go out then window when i sing.

essentially, if you want to save your voice and the original key is too high for you, go one semitone lower. go until your vocals are really stretched BUT manageable. you can push yourself to sing the original key, but if your voice is cracking too much you're very likely to be committing throat suicide on a long term.

there should be no shame in singing a lower key; everyone has a different vocal range.

scream along with the cd ..prefarably late at nite at home when all is quiet so U can really hear ur own voice & how it sounds compared to the voice on the cd .... turn down the volume & scream louder if needed ....

after that do give us a complete report ...including the cops' response time, etc ;)

Hi other than being a guitarist im a singer myself, i have high pitch voice, when i was younger like 22 years old i managed to sing Never let you go and she's gone by steelherat, i was very complacent with my achievements BUT i only knew that i actually used the wrong technique when i took up 3 days singing lessons, i've learnt that every singer/vocalist can managed high notes or screaming is you use right technique without straining your throat, from what i've learnt it's either you use headtone or the falsetto to scream, you can make your voice to come out straight front or upwards behind your head or sarround/stereo. After few songs the only two parts of your body should feel tired is your tummy and your head(if headtone technique applied). NOt your throat at all.

Oh...Seems like I gotta read up more on vocals if I dun wanna damage my voice!(*_*)

About screaming, I don't really know how to, cos' whenever I try, it sounds like...
Just saying it?

Not what I expect to be 'echo-ish' and stuff like that...

But I still think I should train to better singng instead of screaming for now.:p

Thanks anyways!

Singing should be a very relaxed thing and if you feel strained it is most probably because you're pulling your chest voice.

My advice for you is not to sing too much as repeated singing with wrong technique will only make it into muscle memory and it will be hard to correct. I suggest looking for a vocal coach to address your problems before you sing such songs.
