he is the biggest example of how mindless idol worshipping is and blatant commercial exploitation .
everyone knows him as william hung the dude who tried it hard with the get back up attitude and as the loser who tried to $ in on his 5 secs of fame and exploited by both media and industry alike.
how many people know that william hung is a brilliant dude ( U.C berkley is one of the premier engineering colleges in US , comparable in the same breath to MIT , etc ) a smart guy , an engineer wannabe
american idol gives the contestants a chance to pursue a dream of making it big.
but how much of this dream is cloaked in the corruption and twists of commericalism . look at the american idols ? who fell right back into obscurity and the pool of "has-beens" whos time on TV has been passe within a year of the next "idol" show
Singapore idol is boring to the max la .... Sing sing so much so boring .... Auditions quite nice la when the simon scold those peepur .... and i hate william hung la he damn money minded .... feel like bashing him up ....
haha then every week see najip ali with his weird hairdos ..... But it's too long ago to remember .... And this thread later change to "don't you miss the days when" thread ....
And I thought this thread would be dangerous for an Idol h8ter to tread!
Ya, Asia Bagus was tops in the talent show category! What ever happened to it?
As an old-fashioned guy in many ways, I find it frightening to live in the 21st century. Reality t.v., T.v. Mobile etc. The t.v. doesn't ever shut up and you can't shut it out! And to top it all - the Idol phenomenon! So it is true what I read in Rollingstone magazine many years ago. There was this cartoonized MTV advert that depicted an urban microcosm with cyclopic televisions everywhere. The tagline read: t.v. is everywhere. T.v. is God.
How true!
I may not totally agree with your views that Idol-mania has exploited its contestents - but one thing's for certain - it shows you how much art has devolved and it shows us what kind of musical tastes people really have these days (not all of us, thankfully). Most of all - and most frightening of all - it shows us what the people really want!!!
Call me old fashioned , but the only Idol for me is the guy with the whiplashed smile - Billy Idol!
He-he, you remember Haikel and Construction Site? Seems like all the devoted rappers have gone into television! Hence - t.v. is God again
O.k., b4 some Idol-lover accuses us of misusing this thread, I'd better cut it short.
Besides, I got other things to worry about, like my right Wharfedale monitor decided to pass out on me!!!
My question for the next threader would be: Do you think pop music should evolve to such a high state that it would consider having computer-created virtual idols - such as those found in Japanese science fiction cartoons etc.?
In my opinion, the abovementioned scenario would be Real entertainment indeed!
honestly, i dun see any link between pop music and the animated characters. Those jap anime(japanese animation) characters r created in such a way that they are almost perfect. Good looks along with personas that people will like them. However its all just something virtual. Maybe its that hard to find someone like that in the real world so people will go gaga over such anime character.
honestly, i thought asia bagus was better than any of the idol nonsense. really ah singapore. i think we're copying and emulating too much and so much of the west that we;ve basically lost our own identity and concept of entertainment.
quite sad la. then again, who am i to bitch and whine. i only watch cable and even so, its nickelodeon.
