snare drums or full practice kit?

im not quite agree that buying piece by piece is impractical. It is because if one's buy one whole set let say a Forum. Later, he sure want to change his drum pedal to a good one. All the stands and the snare are also just waiting to be changed... so the cost to replace to a pro level hardware maybe cost much more than the Forum itself. Better save up abit, buy shell pack orif u lucky enough u can buy used drums that consist of toms, and kick, and then u can choose ur desired snare and hardwares. With that, u will using ur kit+gear much more longer than an entry level can live without trying to resell ur gear and lose more money.

one thing about practice kits is that they all sound the same. you dont get the tom one and tom two difference. or tom three and snare. i find it very hard to find and enhance my groove on a practice kit. an acoustic kit makes it all the more easier.

A very valuable point here by Joshie here.

Unless, no other choice (really because of space constraint)...Try not to practice drumming on a Practice-Kit (especially as a New Drum Student)....not because the sound is similar only...most importantly is - The Rebound from the practice kit is very different from an Acoustic Kit....and when we try to switch to playing & applying what we do from a Practice-Kit to an Acoustic Kit - We find ourself not grooving...worst it usually sucks - cause we are not used to the Rebound & the Sound from Acoustic Kit....

Because Rebound is different from Acoustic, a student drummer which already develop his stroke/learning from the Practice kit..looses control on Acoustic kit....in fact some have to unlearn to get used to rebound from acoustic....a waste of precious time. Just my opinion from my personal experience.

I have used Black Mesh Netting Head (Pearl type)..and also had tried those Black Rubber Muffler on my entire kit....I have tried all ways to bring volume down if possible and it did...but when I went for lessons....I can't do a proper strokes on an un-muff acoustic kit during my lesson...so I decided to take out all the muffer (don't care lah)...neighbour complain...complain lah (what to do)....and in just 2 months after practicing on a normal kit - My improvement was vast and it just gets better.

Reason; - We learn how to control the Rebound, we learn how to listen to the sound of our playing.....so it's better to learn on a Real Acoustic Kit....Ultimately we have to be able to play on any Acoustic kit cause usually when we play outside - we don't have the luxury to choose.
