Come June this year, one of Singapore’s hottest youth bands, Singapore Management University (SMU) Samba Masala will embark on its first-ever Summer Tour of Singapore. Since its inception in 2003, SMU Samba Masala has busked on the streets of Singapore, enlivened the city campus of SMU and also spent the last two summers performing to much acclaim overseas. This year, to reconnect audiences in Singapore with its sizzling brand of Brazilian Percussion sounds and to showcase the band’s growth via full-length stage performances, SMU Samba Masala presents its 8-day SAMBATIDA Islandwide Summer Tour 2009 of the heartlands and city centre of Singapore.

With SMU Samba Masala’s signature energetic and highly addictive percussion style, SAMBATIDA (derived from ‘batida’, which means ‘beat’ in Portuguese) aims to bring out the rhythm and beat in audiences of all ages and denominations from across the island. The band’s performance repertoire for the tour performances includes traditional Brazilian samba styles such as Maracatu, Batucada and Reggae, to modern Funk and Shuffle-inspired pieces. SAMBATIDA will debut Sharfle, an original piece with catchy shuffle grooves inspired by Brazilian Percussion band Olodum. Samba Masala will also perform crowd favourite Samba Funk, which made its premiere at the SMU Arts Festival 2009 and was well received by the audience.

Led by instructors Budi, Hardy and Sharan from acclaimed local band Wicked Aura Batucada, audiences will be invited to participate in SAMBATIDA performances, interact with the performers, or simply get to their feet and groove to their pulsating, stylish percussion beat. A highlight of their 8-day tour is the band’s centrepiece concert on June 14 at the Central Fountain Square in Clarke Quay, which will showcase various unique elements of Brazilian Percussion and include many musical and aesthetic features not typically seen in street percussion performances. SAMBATIDA is also the chance to catch the pieces that SMU Samba Masala will record for their debut album, which will be released in July.

ABOUT SMU SAMBA MASALA

Singapore Management University (SMU) Samba Masala is probably the hottest and the coolest youth percussion band on the island. Whether you prefer pulsating rhythms or the smooth and sexy Latin groove, SMU’s fusion Asian/ Brazilian percussion band will get you moving with its inimitable music, style and sheer showmanship. Samba Masala’s winning recipe of hot music and high energy performances has brought it to the pinnacle of performing arts.

The unique combination of Brazilian samba instruments such as the repinique, surdo and caixa along with the ethnically-Asian Indian dhol is what sets it apart from any other percussion band in town.

Under the guidance of Budi, Hardy and Sharan from Wicked Aura, Samba Masala has been impressing audiences from within SMU, the general public and even overseas audiences for the past 6 years. Samba Masala’s most recent international forays include various performance showcases in Los Angeles and UCLA in 2007, participating in the 15th Drogheda Samba Festival and engaging in a samba exchange with the London School of Samba in 2008.
