Smoking good for vocal??

an extremely cost ineffective method. it's like buying 4d/toto/whatever. you wanna get rich fast, but ending up f**king yourself in the arse, and end up broke and unhealthy. no offense to smokers and gamblers.

my father, who smokes, as well as many other people i know who smoke as well, tell me that smoking is the worst thing they have ever done. if anyone's thinking of smoking just to "improve" your vocal performance, that's really a stupid idea.

Some think smoking harms your voice becos they are so against smoking in the 1st place becos they either don't like the smell of cigarettes or they belong to that anti-smoking "bad for health" campaign.
But let's face the truth, we are talking about whether smoking is good for your voice or not. So don't face the question with your personal biasness. 1st thing is what is "good"!!
I used to have the soft asian man's voice too, more rather pop voice. And when i was young, i used to want to sing like Bon Jovi with that sexy husky voice. I could never do it then. But after many years of smoking, now i can sing with the husky and sexy tone. Even singing some pop songs sounds better for me now, because there seems to be more air in my voice. Asian male voices tend to be more thin sounding, must be something to do with our small diaghragms or something, but we are born with that. Such voices properly match up well if we are planning to sing chinese pop songs but not well when we sing English songs.
Smoking does give that tone of voice that is defined good in terms of singing English Pop and Rock angle for asian male vocals.
But as for having more breath in singing, exercise more...

Firstly, I smoke. Secondly, I sing. Thirdly, smoking lowers your vocal range.
If you want some voice distortion, don't smoke, learn to lovelovelovelovelovelovelove sing.
Oh. I think you're a fu cking idiot.
Promoting smoking when you're an impressionable kid with your equally impressionable friends is one thing, but you have a studio so I'm assuming you're at the very least in your mid 20s. Some people just take longer I guess. I hope to god you don't have or plan to have any kids, stupidity does get passed on you know.

As for your scientific analysis on asian diaphragms affecting the voice, stop spewing bullshit. The diaphragm has zero effect on the tonal quality of your voice. Shape of your throat/voice box area and what not is the main thing. And tonal quality does not differ that much from different races, you might think so because different languages utilize different shifting of pitches, methods of speaking, and even in certain languages there are many ways of speaking it. Example would be vietnamese, I've met a fair bit and their voices are all very nasal, i doubt it's a coincidence.

Voices are something that is hugely affected by environment rather than specific racially determined physique, the difference for it is insignificant. Ever heard those american born chinese? I bet if you didn't see them you wouldn't even know that their chinese. The only thing that seems to be natural is the vocal range of your full voice, but I think some people even argue against that.
I do think that a fair bit of singaporeans tend to have crappy voices, but their largely based on outside influence, as opposed to how their bodies are built.

Bottomline is.
Smoking can only hurt your voice.
Could give you temporary effects that you desire, but if you smoke to get that little boost in singing temporarily, go jump off a cliff, you idiot.

In case anyone asks "then why do you smoke?"
To me, the pros outweigh the cons.

Logic?

-_- Can everyone just chill and remember that everyone has different opinions and learned definitions for The Cigarette?

I remembered times when I was hanging around under the blk with the mats that smoking for 'rock' voices wasn't an opinion; it was practically logic. It usually goes like (translated):

Vocalist: Oh man, my voice sucked today!
Member: Oh okay. Do you want Gudang Garam or Sampoernas?
Vocalist: I think I'll just have menthols and some teh halia tonight.

Now if a vocal newbie happens to chance upon this 'logic', it's normal to want to question it (because of all the vocal technical awareness and anti-smoking campaigns) unless you've been living and growing amidst chainsmokers. No harm nor reason, just a question of stating whatever facts that can be received and make a conclusive decision on the answers based on your personal rationale and environment.

I'm a smoker,
I don't think it makes my voice huskier (it doesn't for me),
I do notice that it affects my air capacity, which is crucial for my type of vocals and showmanship (try headbanging nonstop for one hour.. IN HEELS AND A CORSETTE)
my health has gone shittier by the year (no health = no jams, no gigs man),
I have more wrinkles,
plus
I'm also wasting a lot of $$$.
But I still smoke because I find pleasure in it and between that (*personal* sense of) pleasure, I am trying to juggle with means to handles its cons.

I don't promote smoking, because at the end of the day, the only rationale -I- choose to pursue is the scientific one, and science has proved that it's bad for your cords (I've seen a smokers' vocal cords, and I had the pleasure of experiencing a chronic smokers' vocal exhibits) and it is based by PERSONAL CHOICES that I am singing and smoking the way I am now.

Nothing to state what's wrong or right, it's just your own personal decision and facing consequences when it comes, just like everything else in life.

If anything, it's not hard to tell it's messing your health up and by the end of the day, that fact is Enough, my friends.

like hello!

of coz smoking makes u sing better.
of coz KKJ won the powerjam competition on their own merit.
of coz Paramore rules.
of coz band competitions in singapore are not rigged.
of coz 98% of males do not watch porno daily.
of coz 99% of males have never wanked in their lives.

knn.

anyways, i read somewhere that everyone has two voices.
one is the singing voice, from the throat.
the other is from the stomach.
im no singer so i wldn't know.

Smoking decreases vocal range. its true. but it gives people these kind of vocals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKHWcE9RGzk

my grandfather is a heavy smoker and i'm always around him. so i breathe in alot of second hand smoke when i was in pri sch.

after he died, i found out my vocal range decreased but i have the ability to scream and reach the same amount pitch i used to have by screaming.

I not supporting smoking though but my theory is if you smoke, you Don't lose your vocal range because vocal range depends on the elasticity of the vocal cords and smoking just COATS UP your vocal cords and you cant use that elasticity of yur vocal chords anymore because it has been covered. Its true because if u dun smoke for a long time, u will gain back yur vocal range. You can also scream to force that pitch to come out and when you do that it also vibrates the coating on yur vocal cords causing it to sound distorted BUT when you scream, you tend to lose your voice easily and it'll take 2~4 days to recover. But You Die Fasterla.

all i can say is that the pros is more than the cons. BUT the cons can lead to death^^

Hi Blank,
Nice talking as though you know a lot... but i think you know nothing...
When i talk about the caucasian voices vs asian voices, i'm talking about a generalisation. Population is a big number, so i cannot speak for all. But if you think you know caucasian voice, i bet you don't, unless your ears have been so stuck, you can't make out the difference. Screw with all that theory, use your ears for once. I know of many music theorist who never did a good job because they only use their math and not their ears..
Caucasian voice in general is different from asian. Ever talk to a white man and notice how their voice tend to sound more rough in general with a strong thickness in tone... unless you didn't hear them speak. I'm talking in general... so don't quote me back with one loud mouth thick voice asian man that you find somewhere.
To tell you the truth, i don't know deep in detail the biology behind the difference, i'm not a biologist, i'm a musician. I mix around with the crowd and i've stayed overseas in aus for many years. I can see the difference, can you?? Or you have been so much at home studying your theory books that you don't get out much.. trying getting out more..
Next thing... i didn't mention that smoking doesn't lower your vocal range, i agree, it does. I'm not saying that smoking helps your voice more, do read my sentences properly. I'm saying that smoking cause more huskiness to the voice, which if it's what a person is looking for, that rock voice, then it's their objective. I see facts for facts, i don't place that "thick head" biasness that you have and blind your eyes or ears with it. Many things in life isn't what you think you like that is right, everyone has their own objective they want to achieve. I don't question their objective, i don't say their objective is wrong and they should follow mine instead. So i hope you be more open minded to know that what you think is right is only what you think.
I know for a fact that getting a good rock voice doesn't mean smoking is the only solution, if that's the case, all rock singers are smokers. Though most are, i've known and read about techniques that improves rock singing. But facts are still facts, smoking still causes the voice to be more husky.
If you ask me, i think you are the real immature kid around, since you cannot understand what i'm talking about. Learn to wisen up, read other's words properly, stop using only your "belief" to talk and start using your ears...

YES, smoking is good for vocals....living proof....mr FGL.
please check with him for more smoking secrets....

Smoking defintely not good for vocals. And you dont need a husky voice to rock. Check out the vocalists from skid row, steelheart, slaughter, helloween, firehouse, journey etc. They dont exactly have that husky voice but they still rock. Its all about the attitude and delivery in my opinion.

lol..smoking is bad for health, can sing means can sing if no talent in singing stop smoking and drink honey water everyday also no use..hahaha..
