wow.. Tenor C then Sop C. is it whistle yet? sorry i'm not very sure about that.

G above middle C, without tension? that'll be like my 2nd next goal
first goal is F# no tension, full tone.
but now, shucks, having slight throat infection.. need to restrain...

Not yet leh. 2 Cs above middle C is the tenor high C, which is C5. Soprano high C is the C above tenor high C, C6.

Whistle usually starts after C6.

Haha, Bb4 is definitely enough for most genres except metal.

kilik: Are you a bass? That G note is crazy low man! What's your comfortable range/tessitura when singing?

no my G is just the lowest note i can hit if stretching my range. my tessitura (i assume usable range?) is a tone after. I can use vibrato on the A, although still it's not a powerful sound like the ones above it.

if its real then good that you haf a big range. but if u not on pitch and stuff.a person with a 1.5/2 octave who sings in pitch all those can be better than you.

I guess your G is vocal fry. Because i think even for a bass, its almost un-hearable as in cant hear what the person is saying In the low g?

From what I've heard, a bass should be able to sing the low G comfortably. A baritone might be able to, and a tenor usually can't. The guidelines in the SLS book, which are just guidelines and not exact prescriptions of range, are:

Bass: E to G (below the low G)
Baritone: G to B (starting at the low G)
Tenor: C to E

Each range being 2 octaves and a bit.

i think 30 mins in enough.. 30 for sls u can learn alot.and u can split to 4 lesson.so at least help ur muscle memory better compared to the 2X1

If you're close enough or don't mind the transport time, I would go for 4x30 min rather than 2 x 1 hour. I think the regular guidance is more useful than less frequent, more intensive lessons.

The best person to ask though would be your teacher. If Alice has no opinion either way, then just choose whichever is more convenient

no idea. i use alice wong cause siau lives at yishun (farfarfar). But from my experience, 30 mins with alice WONG was pretty effective, though I opted for 1 hour sessions. I guess spread out should be better?

Hi Kilik, keep update your progress. My sister is interested in using Alice Wong as well but she is not sure yet.

SLS and Singing Success

if you guys are know what is sls and have been following it, you should know that there's this technique which is derived from it. Its by a guy called brett manning.

The foundation is pretty much the same but they have a more dynamic way of teaching and more detail examples unlike sls. Which is only 2 disc i bought, that brings me through all the exercise but know way of knowing whether im doing it correctly. In singing, practise doesn't make perfect. Perfect practise makes perfect. This new technique by brett manning is called Singing Succes. The whole set of disc cost about US$299. Fugging ex. Budden i downloaded the torrent. You guys should visit www.singingsuccessonline.com and watch the video lessons from the beginning. And you will understand that singers constantly battle to find the 'mix'. It is really all about focus.

But some ppl disagree with me because they say singing is all about feeling and emotions and it shouldn't be so technical. Some singings do it so easy because they're born with pretty much a connected voice! but for most of us, especially in asia, our voice are pretty much undeveloped somewhat due to the way we speak(we dun really open our mouths to speak unlike caucasians) or genetics. That is where SLS and Singing Success kicks in.
Haley williams, miley cyrus, josh groban, michael jackson are just some of the big names who use this technique.

I've taken a few sls lessons before(shall not disclose the name of the instructor). i was asked to release my voice into the "mix" which i think sounds exactly the same as falsetto. Is this supposed to be the correct way to learn the "mix"(to release into "falsetto" and develop it from there)?

What is the difference between the "mix", head voice, and falsetto?

In SLS terminology, there are two basic voice mechanisms, chest and head. Mix is made by using both mechanisms at the same time. That's the over-simplified version

Falsetto (in SLS terminology) typically means when you sing above your chest voice range but aren't able to connect your vocal cords fully. If you connect them fully, it becomes head voice. Keep in mind that what you know as falsetto may not be what your teacher calls falsetto, and also that you may not be able to hear or feel the difference your teacher is looking for (the difference between disconnected and connected).

Anyway, you can go a number of ways, and starting with falsetto then connecting it to get head voice is one of those ways. Your teacher's job is to find what approach will work for you.

Compression

VOCAL COMPRESSION

What is vocal compression? It is simply the maintained closure of the vocal chords while a person sings. So, the only way to get pass the mix is balanced vocal compression.

For eg.

Some while realise when the approach the bridge, all the muscles tighten up and the higher they go, the squeezier the sound becomes. Somewhat like constipation. That is when they over compress

While for others, there is no such thing as vocal compressions. The sound solid in the chest register but as the bridge approaches, they feel like they have nothing to hold the voice together. That is when the voice breaks into falsetto. Hence you won't get any connection you see.

Compression does not mean squeezing or tensing up the muscles around the vocal cord. What we want to achieve here is compression without weight.
