Slides and All...

hey, i was just wondering about slides....
i saw a few shops around that sell SLIDES, they come in like metal or glass slides... can someone tell me the purpose of these slides?

also, i read somewhere that a certain guitarist used a guitar tuned to A as a SLIDE GUITAR... what is a slide guitar? and what is it used for?
