SEOUL (AFP) - - South Korean scientists have cloned cats by manipulating a fluorescent protein gene, a procedure which could help develop treatments for human genetic diseases, officials said Wednesday.

In a side-effect, the cloned cats glow in the dark when exposed to ultraviolet beams.

A team of scientists led by Kong Il-keun, a cloning expert at Gyeongsang National University, produced three cats possessing altered fluorescence protein (RFP) genes, the Ministry of Science and Technology said.

"It marked the first time in the world that cats with RFP genes have been cloned," the ministry said in a statement.

"The ability to produce cloned cats with the manipulated genes is significant as it could be used for developing treatments for genetic diseases and for reproducing model (cloned) animals suffering from the same diseases as humans," it added.

The cats were born in January and February. One was stillborn while two others grew to become adult Turkish Angoras, weighing 3.0 kilogrammes (6.6 pounds) and 3.5 kilogrammes.

"This technology can be applied to clone animals suffering from the same diseases as humans," the leading scientist, Kong, told AFP.

"It will also help develop stemcell treatments," he said, noting that cats have some 250 kinds of genetic diseases that affect humans, too.

The technology can also help clone endangered animals like tigers, leopards and wildcats, Kong said.

South Korea's bio-engineering industry suffered a setback after a much-touted achievement by cloning expert Hwang Woo-Suk turned out to have been faked.

The government banned Hwang from research using human eggs after his claims that he created the first human stem cells through cloning were ruled last year to be bogus.

Hwang is standing trial on charges of fraud and embezzlement.

I miss having cats. I want a glow in the dark pussy cat!!

F*ck animal testing!

Well, don't know lah.

It's not like they are testing on existing animals mah.

They just took DNA from another cat (just swabbed saliva from the cat, I think.. No harm done) then funked up the DNA and..

VOILA!!

Glow in the dark cute little creatures!!! Well, not really glow in the dark cos need to be under UV light lah.

But of course, it's another 'morality' issue cos seems like these scientists are like 'playing God'..

If you ask me though, I am inclined to think like a man of science.

Discovering more and more about ourselves and our universe.

We may never know anything lah but it's always nice to know more.

;)

but don't you think you're going against the forces of nature?

i mean, how do u know the cats approve for the scientists' acts? cats still do have feelings, and if u do love cats just like how i assume you would be, i'm sure you wouldn't want them to be hurt, do you? it just spells out cruelty to animals.

put it this way, would you want urself or even ur families to be tested, cloned or even be glowed in the dark by scientists?

think about it.. :)

i prefer not to see my cats in the dark!

but seriously..i do not like them doin that to cats..

i mean..even if they did that to pigs..i'd still strongly object, though im a muslim and not allowed to touch nor consume pigs/pork..i dun even think they're cute.in fact i tink they're ugly..

but still..animal empathy?? i dunno..but well..try cloning humans den.

well..im not exactly religious.but im not secular either..i strongly believe in God and his powers and marvels and yada yada..

there are people saying that "humans are playing God".

to a certain extent i agree..BUT at the same time..there's some form of disagreement within me..why??

cos..God can create something out of nothing..BUT humans cant create smth out of nothing..they need smth to start with..*shrugs*

flame me all you want.

+10

its going against nature man... haiz...
try it on humans la... the animal noe nothing

I am sure some people here are going to immediately shout "ASS KISSER!!" but Boon bro, I really enjoyed your band's performance sia at the Asian Beats Finals!

All 3 of you kick ass lah! Especially you on the guitar although I don't find your singing memorable. Hehehe...

But on the instruments, man! You guys made me wanna move!

Well, nothing to do with the cats and I am not exactly condoning the cloning shit or whatever but I don't think I have to like hate cats to think that the glow in the dark cats look cool somehow, no matter what you guys think.

It's not like they have to kill hundreds of 'guinea pig' cats to derive DNA or that the protein that makes the cats glow under UV is like harmful to the cats. I don't know for sure but no way am I going to get all emo on this man.

Kekekeke...

all of you nature purists should wake up. if not for modern technology, genetically modified food, and the green revolution, the world would not have been able to feed its exploding population. 60 years ago we could have been in deep shit

now wouldnt it be great if we could cure all kinds of diseases such as AIDS and STDs, are we gonna debate over morality and shit or are we gonna try to survive?

indeed, there's alot of theory/movies/videogames saying that if you screw up the "god's creation" , human race will pay dearly.
stuff like trying to modify human gene to create some form of super weapon for military purposes end up destroying the world bla bla

but what shinobi said is somehow right, either way or another, an entity out there in space more powerful than "god" will destroy earth anyway in a few million years time or so. either something to do with the sun, or the moon leaving us causing imbalance in the degree of the earth spinning , or some weird ass planet/asteroid will collide with earth. it's that similar technology that will keep the human race running. maybe thats why there're documentaries science is trying to tap into "time travelling" cos who knows the only way of survival is to bring the future technology back into the past when the earth was still cool , nowadays the weather is insane. y'know, global warming and stuff.

i was watching south park, episode "Goobacks from the future" , sometimes it's quite amazing how these movie/film writers come up with this stuff. the people that came from the future were all bald, and their race is united. combination of all races and the language was also combined (so it sounds like they're talking nonsense). if you think about it ,chances of that happening is quite possible. y'know the interracial thing then one fine day in the future our race/nationality/skincolour/culture/language/looks will all be put in one fat blender.

so.. it's really about point of views. either you're with them or against them, or you're singaporean : bo chup.

guess where I stand? haha

as long as there are meteors and asteroids flying around in space... as long as there are nuclear weapons on earth... as long as there are supervolcanos that remain unerupted... whenever the probability of a disaster occurring is not zero... the longer we go on without it happening, the greater the number of trials that take place, the more we tempt fate

IT WILL HAPPEN

and as time goes by the probability will keep increasing. its sooner or later. and it is getting sooner

All this talk about cloning kinda pops this question in my head,
Do these animals (or any living thing for that matter), have souls?

I think a glowing cat (or other pet) would be cool.

I'm all for it.

Of course, making glowing cats is not the objective of the South Korean team - it's a side effect. The purpose of their research is ultimately linked to deriving solutions which will benefit mankind. Therefore I'm in agreement with Shinobi - without this kind of research which, where necessary, involves animal testing or usage of animals we most probably would not have the quality of life and life expectancy we do today...

reminds me of the pigs which had some jellyfish dna of some sort..

similarly the pigs glowed in the dark..only that the pigs were green not orange.

so because of wanting to have a quality of life and life expectancy that we have today, u'd rather test it on another weak species? :?

this honestly is a very grey area. there is really no right or wrong. it comes down too ur own core values and belief system i feel.
