single coil hum

Can anyone give some advice on how to get rid of a hum from a single coil? I am using a two pickup guitar on the front is a fender single coil and on the back is a PAF. Whenever I rotate the two pickups there is a huge difference in noise level. I have tried guitar shielding but there is still noise. I have seen some guitars with true single coils on but the there is no noise on it. Any experts out there to give advice?

the guitars you're referring to with single coils and no hum is probably because they are running two pickups simultaneously and the hum cancels out. Theres the option of going with a noise gate, or swapping out the single coil for a humbucker.

noise

i tried a fender mexico strat, all the positions are quiet. So I am curious on how they do it. I also check that the pickups are standard single coils. Maybe my wiring got problems. If my pots are old, will they cause this? My pickups are new so I should not suspect the problem.

I thought the single coils produce a 60Hz hum(and thats one of the unique characteristics of the strat after all  ), dunno how they go about getting all the pickups positions to be noiseless..unless you are talking about the texas pups then different story...i learnt that the pups are of reverse polarity so running 2 pups simultaneously will cancel out the hum..

how do u hear 60 cycle hum?

i have a strat but cant hear it.... issit becoz of the tex mex pups or i just havent noticed?

I switched out the 500K pot to 250K pot, I also ground the single coil black wire to the live and white wire to ground. The noise is amazingly gone. I have yet to try this with the 500K pot.
