Sing like they do

Anyone got any idea how to get that rough edge so characteristic to hard rock to your voice?

I read somewhere you sing from your bottom of your throat , dont exactly know how to do that.

Some of their voices are "spoilt" so to speak, from the effects of smoking. But i guess most of it's natural.

Heh give yourself a sore throat. Some people naturally sound like that, some are able to with some effort, but others (like me) dont and cant sound like that unless they have a bad sore throat.

Singing from your throat will spoil your voice as time goes by.

for classical singing u need to sing with ur diaphgrm supporting it. it goes for all form of singing if u want your voice to sound clear and articulate .

e.g Bon Jovi , living on a prayer --> bon jovi has pretty decent technique

but like led zeppelin (dun flame me for this , i am a led zeppelin fan too) , robert plant , if u seen some of his lives , his voice cracks and wavers when he sings. thats bad technique.

I think Dream Theatre's James Labrie is interesting. He can use a clear voice then suddenly put a rough edge to it...
