Showing interest....

Hey people out there...

I'm beginning to show interest in drums now...

So how do I get started???

It doesn't hurt to learn new instruments rite...

Should I do it as I've did with my guitar/bass?? --> self-taught

Or should I enroll in a drum course??? --> heard itz expensive....

Of course it doesn't hurt to play a new instrument.

I recommend picking up the basics by joining lessons. Group ones are obviously cheaper. Drums is something you can learn quite easily by yourself though but I think the basics can be quite important. If you want to learn by yourself I suggest getting a cheaper kit to start with or crash your friend's place to borrow a kit. :roll:

Drums is also more enjoyable to learn with music and it's quite easy to learn by playing a cd to accompany it.

Welcome to the club!!!

I'll advise you to attend lessons. It is important that you get your fundamentals right the 1st time. I'll suggest that you don't go for group lessons, instead go for a one-to-one lesson with a good teacher. You will get more out of a lesson in this way. Always remember, a good player doesn't equates to a good teacher. Drummers like Jimmy Lee and tony Zee are good teachers.

Hi lightmrwan_sg, it's good to know you have interest in drums. As a start, you don't have to go for lessons. You can always ask pointers from drummer-frens on basic stuff about drumming. And if you're into it, you can join us in our next drum exchange, and from there you can get pointers and tips on stuffs etc, and once you decided to take drumming to the next level, then it's time for you to get an instructor :D

We'll be holding it once a month. Look out for the SDC Jam-Xchange thread. We'll be posting it under the Drum-People folder for the next one :D

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK... BTW U shud get CEDRIK CORK (EX SHYYNE DRUMMER) down to demo - highly expirienced drummer..bizz20/20 has his ctc... :lol:

i've kinda self taught myself for 5mths since i started, listening to cds to play along...think its time i move forward to an instructor eh..?

i am. started since 11. its great that u actually learn urself but as u progress get a teacher to correct u and stuff. Its more fun learnin on ur own but when u got the hang of it and u start to play well its time u got a teacher to start showing u proper ways of playing.

i think go for lessons for the basics, then quit. if you stay for basic training for long, your foundations will be concrete, but you improve slower. if you just learn the basics then find everything else out on your own, it gets a bit tough along the way, but you improve by leaps and bounds. your improvisation also is kind of stronger if you learn by yourself. videos, music, watching people play. copy them wholesale. their beats, their fills, their facial expressions. once you get enough of this you should be able to come up with stuff on your own.

just what i think is right. two cents worth.
