SHARE: 2 drives are better than 1

greetings friends 8)

i believe there are players among us who employ 2 drive pedals to create a cascading gain effect. in addition to more drive, this set up helps trigger artificial harmonics more readily (but forgive the background hiss....). perhaps we can share which 2 are most potent in our employment?

recently, i swallowed some pride & checked out Marshall's Guv'nor Plus pedal & was surprised with the default plexi-type cream from this unit. i'm now using it with my smaller combos, having matched it with many mild drive-type units as boosters, the most compatible of which was none other than my TS-7 8)

i used to haf a simple setup for my drive

danelectro fabmetal -> boss ds1

the fabmetal was very trebly and hissy on its own even with the tone cut all the way, but had tonnes of distortion

and the ds1 was veri good at compressing the sound, and i like cutting the tone all the way to smoothen out the sound

so the final sound? think steve morse, with a veri broken speaker sound, as for the background hiss, it would still be there

haha u shld try to use an overdrive and a distortion together. it sounds much better! i use a route 66 together with a righteous tones fang. sounds great.

I'm using Moen Deep Blue into Violent metal (for even more violent tones) and GT-2 (for mid rangey, old school rock).

Chunky, smooth and hella noisy.

i've found that using a clean boost rather than an od or a distortion into another od or distortion gives a much clearer and less artificial sound. in the past, i've used a voodoo lab sparkle drive into a jekyll 'n hyde and a z.vex super duper 2-in-1 clean boost into a foxrox zim, mi audio crunch box, and kimjawbetta rutt. right now, i'm using a lovepedal eternity boosted with the super duper and a z.fex fuzz factory.

i use a ts9 after my ds-1 and i get a kinda smooth distortion that i like.the ts helps to 'polish' the ds-1 a little. HAHA i'm just curious to know... what's the general order for od pedals and distortion pedals? od first then ds or ds first then od? i prefer the latter. ;)

wasabe19: no particular order, the one that works for you, is the winner 8) however, the recommendation is to place the milder unit before the primary/ main/ stronger one.

jon_: the clean boost indeed works as well but IMO it's ear candy only if you are content with the primary drive unit.

sub: that's definitely true, i doubt that i would be nearly as happy with my tone if i were still using a ds-1 like when i started out. i'm really happy with the eternity though, it's pretty much my dream sound in a box.

I have my TS808 before my Mike Modded DS-1. It's excellent but of course the hiss is there. That's where my NS-2 comes in...but have to be careful that the threshold setting does not go beyond 12 o'clock and the decay is nil. If not, it becomes too sterile.

i'm not trying to demote the GT-2 here but i get better tonal results with a boosted GDI21- the reason i bought one (never mind if it doesn't have a midrange control...).

many people dislike the 'cheap' of Behringer units... their dissent is valid since there are reliability issues to date but it depends on the users' treatment & expectations as well.

the combo im using now is a TriGainMT2 -> Ds1Ultra.

the mt2 is set to very overdriven like sound with alot of treble. the the ds1 sorta open up the sound and of course adds another ton of gain.
