Hi, i have a new piece of nut and saddle for my acoustic guitar. Is there a place that will help me file and install those at a good price?

lots of people can do the job. you should bring your guitar down to peninsular/excelsior hotel basement to compare the prices.

Thanks for the response. im guessing since the shops are in close proximity, i doubt the price varies much. Im hoping i could be enlightened to places not as mainstream but offers good price and quality.

all you have to do is state your specifications and see if it's within your budget. mainstream is not a bad thing. I have never heard of a music store screwing up nuts and saddles. what is your idea of a good price? we can narrow down your search from there. of course, materials used plays a part in the overall price.

there is saying "you get what you pay for" and I believe that applies to many things.

not many music stores that screw up nuts and saddles? maybe we don't hear them on soft very often but i'm pretty sure it happens more often than we think.

My point is: nut and saddle installation, especially on an acoustic guitar, is almost a once-in-a-guitar-lifetime thing. If you can, shell out some money and get a really really good luthier to do it for you. Then you will have no regrets at all.

If you try to save on the money and realise that your nut or saddle was improperly installed, it could shake your morale quite a lot.

Do consider this point before making a decision, and best of luck!

I'm pretty sure if a store screws up a repair job, you can go back to the shop and ask them to do it until you are satisfied. If they can't do it, there are 2 reasons. either they really shouldn't be in the business or there is something really wrong with your guitar that even the best nut / saddle job can't save it.

if there are shops who don't provide such a service, then I guess their names would be listed in some thread on the music kopitiam forum. It just isn't right.

in conclusion, I too believe that not many shops screw up such jobs. true that it's important to get it right but the user has to know what is wrong to conclude whether it's a good or bad job. there is no one standard kind of set up that would please everyone. in any case, I don't believe in spending "too much" on such a job as well as spending more does not equate to a good job done. there is a certain market rate around.

Thanks guys for your helpful comments. I guess it boils down to just giving a shop a shot at doing the nut and saddle and form an opinion from there. Coz im not very familiar with acoustic guitar mods to have knowledge on the average price range. And the prices seem to vary alot.

I read about Jarvis on doing up nuts and saddles. But personally i feel his prices are off the charts, like 200+ for nut and saddle. Or is that the normal range? Is it advisable to file down nuts and saddles on your own? Shouldn't be rocket science right?

Thanks again!:)

I think there is a misunderstanding there. have you contacted Jarvis about his rates? I think the $200+ job is because of the FMI material that he usually recommends.

Jarvis is pretty reliable. I think his user name on soft is champion.

Hi, ive check the rates. Unbleached bone nut goes for 130 and saddle for 90. So total for 220. Is this the market price?
