Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II

Anyone has installed this set of pick ups on their guitars?

I hear the output quite low.. as compared to other 'hotter' pick ups..

Any comments?

Yea it's output is low. The alnico 2 magnet really makes the guitar "sing". Overdriven tones are really smooth. Cleans are good as well, if you get one with the 4 conductors then you'll be able to achieve some really nice cleans with coil tapping. Oh yea, if you're into power grinding metal, forget about this pickup.

*note: my opinions are biased due to me being a huge fan of alnico 2 magnets

I tried it on a les paul custom and I was quite disappointed. I mean i prefered the original pickups. But when I put it on a strat-style Alder body guitar, it became one of my favourite. Very very nice.

compared to a pair of gibson 490/498... it isnt all that hot

but when single notes are played, it really sings.

anyone compared it with a set of SD 59s? they sound pretty similar
to me when I heard them on the seymour duncan website....

the AIIPro is a resident humbucker in my Ibanez SZ (neck). there's this misconception that a lower output unit would be less favourable tone wise, especially when drive is concerned. it's all about accepting what you want to hear from what you wish to own. it's no use pitting the AIIPro against a distortion unit for instance, it's serving a diff need.

the AIIPro thrives on medium drive settings, but it handles my high gain set-up very well. it's also a superb clean unit although not as immaculate as Duncan's Jazz model. i prefer the neck AIIPro as oppossed to the bridge counterpart- strictly personal this one... 8)

Thats a nice picture dude...

How come you have the seymour duncan logo on the front?

Mine doesnt have the logo on the front, just the usual prints at
the back with the APH-1 stickers behind.

But yea... its pretty vintage sounding and will sound great with the right
amp settings...

His Alnico II is in the neck, the bridge is something else.

Subversion: Care to tell us what bridge model that is?

right on, poo! the AIIPro has no Duncan decal on it- blank. the AIIPro is in the neck position. the bridge humbucker there is the Custom Custom...

not an over-the-top combination but they serve me well... the CC is one of the few 'surprise' model fr Duncan IMO. it can do some nice crunch/ high gain 8)

What you guys think of fitting a Dimarzio PAF at the bridge with the Alnico Pro II in the neck?

That would be quite a killer combination..

subversion... what amp do you pack?

the guitar you see here is my Ibanez RG560 with the Dimarzio PAF in the bridge. despite being yellow & excessively unattractive, it produces one of the fattest tone in my arsenal. i was into Dimarzio's Super Distortion initially but at the time of enquiry, it was out of stock. it was a twist of fate really, because i ended up liking it very much... the white humbucker in the neck is Duncan's Lil'59, a perfect match for the PAF...

the PAF is a neutral pickup in my books- it'll handle anything you throw at it, clean & driven.

i've gone solid state- using Peavey's XXL, a very under-rated amp with lots of high gain ear candy in store...
