Serial numbers on Gibson Les Paul Standards

I am urgently in need to know why some serial numbers at the back of the headstocks of Les Paul standards are INK-PRINTED on instead of ENGRAVED on?

The model i am looking at is a 2004 model.

Anybody who is experienced in this field?
