Semi Hollow Recommendation

hi, soft.com forum members! :)

im looking for recommendations for a semi-hollow guitar.

budget: $950

styles i'm hoping to cover with it: jazz, some blues, a little bit of classic rock

hoping for: reliable tuning stability, acceptable factory setups, acceptable durability, acceptable hardware

i'm currently looking at the Epiphone Dot. But i'm willing to look at all other brands as well.

anyone got any nice semi hollow guitars to recommend?

Epiphone's are decent, i guess, and people are saying good things about the Epi Dot. You could probably get a much better Greco one or something, if you hung around the Buy/Sell section though.

the Dot's pretty good but you got to look around for a good piece. The workmanship on some can be atrocious. You can try the casino, nice jangly tones that would work pretty well esp if you roll the tone knob off... however, they feedback like crazy so that might be something you'd want to think about as well.. for that price, maybe it might be worthwhile to check out the Yamaha series, they seem pretty well made to me

thanks for the recommendation guys! please keep them coming i'm going round guitar shops these few days to check them out.

jem007 - replied your pm. thanks for the offer :)

your budget is for a new guitar or used?
if it is the latter, lucille should fit the bill just nice.. hehe

my priority goes out to new guitars at the moment.. so yeah.

after a previous deal with a dishonest softie (whom i do not wish to name), i have lost trust in buying second hand guitars in the singapore market.

anyway, in a solid body guitar, when testing a new piece, i usually look out for dings or scratches, bad toggle switch, bad vol or tone pots, bad tuning stability, and tuners sometimes not in line.

i understand that in a semi-hollow guitar, one has to look out for more than just that.

would someone care to enlighten me on what more to look out for when buying a semi-hollow?

I think the electronics, shielding, and hollowbody cavities play a part too, due to the increased likelihood of feedback.

Oh, and an easy way to check the quality of the finish on a semi-hollow guitar is to check the edges of the f-holes, see if they're finished properly.

Anyway, if you do not really want to spend that much, you could look into getting a Rally Neosound, an Epiphone Dot "Copy" that goes for $390 at StandardValue. If im not wrong, rally guitars were the OEM of Epiphone guitars before and they have very good reviews.

ahh yes. im having a look at it now. it's very tempting.

but when i get it, i assume i'll have to change out the bridge, nut, tuners, pickups, switches and pots. i think i'll have to get it set up too. that should all amount to about 500 if im lucky. making the total cost about 890.

i think it's not bad. :)

Hey mate, there's a decent one at Davis Guitar, available in black or white. If i'm not wrong it costs around 400+? Should be worth going to check out, i'm thinking of getting one of those myself. :D
