S-1 switch, can it be installed?

it's just a button that rearranges the pickups from series to parallel, so i'm guessing a mechanical switch will do the trick

This is the "default mode", and you'd probably need to install a switch such that the ground on the neck pickup connects to the positive on the bridge pickup. a dpdt switch should do the trick, with one pole switching between ground and positive end of the bridge pickup for the neck pickup, and the other pole cutting connection between positive end of bridge pickup to volume pot

Just a guess though. Can't seem to find the s-1 basses on the fender site anymore... i guess they scrapped 'em, so maybe iit's a bit overhyped

spot on, bro. just this year in fact

A fourth push button control is available on American-made Jazz Basses produced between mid-2003 until 2008. Known as the "S-1 Switch", this feature allows the pickups to operate in standard, parallel wiring, or alternatively in series wiring when the switch is depressed. While in series, both pickups function as a single unit with one volume control, giving the Jazz Bass a sound more similar to the Precision Bass. The two pickups are built to be opposite from each other in both magnetic polarity and electrical phase, so that when heard together, hum is cancelled -- the humbucking effect.
In 2008, the American Series models were replaced by a new American Standard line which is totally different than the first-generation American Standard Series basses introduced in 1994. The differences between the 1994 and the 2008 versions are a rolled edge neck with highly detailed nut and fret work, as well as a rounded body shape with a vintage body radius. The S-1 switching system has been discontinued in favor of new features such as a new high-mass vintage bridge, Hipshot lightweight vintage-style tuning machines, new neck finishes and a micarta nut.

might be because of production cost reasons...

or maybe it is a sign of the success of the japanese-made fender jaguar bass. the jag doesn't use S-1 but it has a series/parallel switch as well as a whole load of active/passive crap.

if i happened to one day dig a thousand bucks out of my ass, i can safely say that I WILL BUY THAT BASS

S1 fender basses are not popular that why, fender launch new 2008 american standard, back to the old days, just vol and tone knobs.

they must have had a negative or lukewarm response from the public. i mean... s-1 switching sounds like a good deal. everything you can get from a normal jazz bass, + an extra config

how did that old wise saying go? oh yea, "less is more, but more is still more"

i don't think it was down to popularity. it was just redesigned to be more 'vintage'. they zhnged other aspects of the bass, to have the s-1 on top of all that would have affected the cost. and that would have been unpopular. if american fenders didn't sell they would have pulled it long before
