 Hi all, i'm a hobbyist drummer, on and off will jam with frens , but mostly jus practise at home with my set and my mp3 player.
So when there is a jam session i will always have the tendancy to rush the song, my groove, feel is quite bad..... Just dun feel good when i spoil the friendly jam session, although no fierce complaints from band members. they still try to enjoy every bit of the session.... but i felt like shit......
Any expertised advise from you guys?
Thanks in advance.. :p

You can get a Tama Rhythm Watch, which is a special metreome for drummer to use. Or if budget low, just get general purpose one.

Most have earphone output. You can plug into the PA system, and see if you band is comfortable to playing with a rhythm source. So you and your band can develope a common groove from there. Some band can, some band cannot.

Most of the time is ear problem. You need to train your ear to sync with your band parts, your closest partner should be your bassist.

hey man i feel ur pain. rushing however is better than slowing down i feel cause, slowing down kills the groove of the band, rushing alittle is not all that serious live. there were some thing i did and am still good to acheive gd time.
1. get a metronome
2.alot of drummer have trouble with their right foot. theres wat i did.
F=foot R=right hand L=left hand
Ex.1
RL FF RL FF
Ex.2
RF LF RF LF
Ex.3
LFF RFF LFF RFF
Ex.4
play the bass drum and R or L hand in unison

All these excercises are to be done with a metronome. move ard the kit with them, toms, hi hat etc etc.... Also pulse 2n4 on the hi hat. this will be useful to keep time when doing fills. All these are to be taken as 16th notes so set ur metronome to 16ths this will cause u to be very accurate. make u sure u can play these at all speeds. STAY RELAXED. breathe!

3. set the metronome at a certain speed and just play. alternate between 16th notes and 8th notes. only go as fast as u can when relaxed, if u tense up go slower.

4.when u have this down, which will be several mths from now. switch the sound of the click off and just play to the blinking lights. play 4 bars looking at the click and 4 bars without. if ur time is steady when u look at the click again u'll be right on the 1.

5. record urself witht eh click thats when u see when u then to drift.

6 record urself with the band. u can see where u drift, sometimes its the whole band and not only u that rushes. may not be u, but dun hold ur breathe on that one heh.

7. a band will have an ebb and flow if everyones time is steady u all will move together.

8. forget the click and get a chick.

:D thanks alot for the expertise advises given,,, guess will have to spend a great deal of time on these first before my next jam session... thanks again

Go and get Billy Ward's DVD "Big Time"
He demonstrates various mechanisms that can help you to imporve your time keeping..

:?
For the foot exercise, i use to do it in fast tempos, to increase the strength of my right foot, never tried it slowly before.
Well ur advise are useful, tried it yesterday for 2 hours jus playing 60bpm.. feels great after that.
thanks alot again..
Hi "rimshot", thanks for the reccomendation, will lookout for it..

play more :) the more experience you get, the more relaxed you will be, and the smaller the tendency to rush.

don't be so sad dude :) if they're your friends then it should be ok :) just have a laugh and play some more!

I also encounter this problems too. I sometime also confused by the metrome too. Also got prob with the coordination with right legs. I believe that if u can do 3 or 4 speparate things at the same time(right hand, left hand, right foot and left foot) u are a good drummer! If u cant like me :( have to work hard a lot. The prob is that my house are those drum machines the position of hi-hat,snare, tomtoms are in together not releastic. Only during jamming session then i got the chance to practice the real one. Any help from u all drummers? My house is too small to allow to put the real drum...

as the experts have said above, relax is the key. what i normally do is to keep time quaternote on the left heel or the highhat. hey shawn040, u can try the stagestar or rythem traveller, mines a stage star used for 2 years plus. quite a space saver, :D

drummer playing too fast not as irritating as playing too slow.. the rest will catch up and u will go faster and b4 u know it, u're playing death metal.. :D

It helps to foot count, head bang, sway your body abit etc etc when you play. But make sure that you're counting/banging/swaying to a certain beat in your head. That way, you're more likely to keep in time as you're 'forcing' yourself to move in that time.

Time keeping is a pain for me too, but I've tried to listen to the beat of the song before counting etc so I can get into the mood of the song.

For example, you can play some songs which do not have a drum accompaniment in the beginning and it comes in later. Listen to the songs a few times, get the general timing of the song and air drum it a little before going it to the actual set. If possible, find a metronome and match it to the song. That way, you can get the timing right. If cannot, try again. And again, and again =)

hi yuen.... try doing this... sing the chorus before you start the tempo of the song and relate it to the verse as well..and even after you start, continue to sing the verse or chorus ..etc...hope it helps..a very simple way to do it.. or if you want..jam and practice with a metronome... but dont get to mechenical.
