Rondo Music & SX Guitars

Hey all~ I'm thinking of spending $140 of my Yusofs on a SX Strat from Rondo. The idea is to get a cool and fun tone boy for $350-450. Basically its just the body and neck of the guitar we're after, pickups and electronics and nut and setup will be on our on.

Anyone has gone this route? Alder body and maple neck seems bonafide, and tdpri.com has raved about it. A friend is already set on getting a bass, I'm considering embarking with him on a Strat project.

Comments and suggestions? Disapprove and get MIM Fender? Nah I don't think I will for the price I would have to pay hehe.

Seriously, SX guitars have never impressed me in terms of feel and tone. Pay abit more and get either Smash guitars or Timbre guitars. Sub has a review on Smash guitars on this site somewhere.

Smash are in basswood, I'm attracted to the Alder of SX. Also I would still change out the pickups and electronics in any budget zengness project. The idea is to keep it with $400.

Thanks for the recommendation though, I might just look into a Standard Value option.

maybe you can consider craftsman guitar from city music too. remember when i was buying my pod i used 1 of those strat copies, pretty good experience.

good experience with the smash guitar too. do note it is heavy.

have played on my friend's SX guitar before and it wasnt too shabby either.

among all these, i vote for the smash. however the start price would be 270(?) which is 100 more than the sx, and this 100 could mean a swap of saddles or tuners

I want the Alder sound vs the Smash's basswood, although I wouldn't mind heavy guitars. Also I want a SSS config, I think there is a Smash model that is Alder but has a humbucker cavity. And yep the $100 could get me new tuners and thingamajigs that I may also want to change out anyway if I got a Smash.

You guys think it would be a waste if i dropped Kinmans into the SX?
