What can GarageBand do for me?

If you want to learn to play an instrument, write music, or record a song, GarageBand can help, regardless of whether you're a new musician or a rock star.

Do you need to know how to play an instrument before using GarageBand '09?

GarageBand '09 comes with nine basic video lessons for new musicians to provide them with enough information to play a song as quickly as possible. You can even learn to play specific songs by purchasing optional artist video lessons by well-known musicians such as Norah Jones, John Fogerty, and Sting.

Is GarageBand '09 useful to experienced musicians?

Yes, it is. This new version of GarageBand allows musicians to play through five newly modeled amplifiers and a host of stomp box audio effects. You can even use these new amps and stompbox effects tho re-create the sound of legendary guitar rigs on your Mac. Just plug in an electric guitar and choose from over 30 complete rigs, including Brit Pop, Honky Tonk, Lowdown Blues, Seattle Sound, Stadium Solo, and Woodstock Fuzz. Add virtual stompboxes that reproduce classic foot pedals, including Fuzz Machine, Blue Echo, and Auto-Funk. Then get a 3D view of your rig — complete with amp, speaker cabinet, and stompboxes.

Is it expensive to get GarageBand '09?

No, it isn't. GarageBand '09 comes free with every Mac or Macbook purchased in 2009. It is one of the many applications that part of iLife on your Mac.

Can I record music with GarageBand '09?

Yes. You can record your doodlings or fingerings, as well as your vocals and instruments. With GarageBand '09, you literally have your very own home recording studio at your fingertips.

Is it fun using GarageBand '09?

You can even jam with your own virtual band on GarageBand! With all of the available JamPacks, you have over 10,000 instruments and loops that are mostly MIDI and fully personalisable to make them your own. The interface is extremely easy to navigate. For example, you can just highlight, split track, press delete and all your white noise between vocal takes are gone!

Please post any questions that you may have about this Garageband event and about the features or requirements of GarageBand '09!

This is definitely useful for those who are trying to record their music DIY style. We have a lot of posts in the forum asking about how to connect guitars/microphones to the computer for recording, this workshop will simplify the process by letting users try out the gears.

Remember to register early! It's happening this Fri.

And in case you guys didn't know, Ivan Chew and Merle are our fellow Softies as well. Do check them out and support them!

Thank You! And critique of my demo segment is most welcome

Hi all,
This is Ivan Chew. I'm not sure if anyone would catch this thread since the demo is over. Just want to put on record my thanks to the nice folks from City Music (Mike, YL & SL); Kestrel & Lisa; and James. To cut a long story short, thanks for giving airtime to Starfish Stories.

Oh, if you're one of those who stayed back for my demo session, please feel free to let me know what you found useful; what wasn't; what you felt could've been done better (by me). If you're too shy to post your comments publicly, email me at RamblingLibrarian@gmail.com

Thanks again!
Ivan Chew
