Ride Cymbal BELL trick?

Hey guys i often hear drummers playing nice groove on the ride cymbal bell, the bell is played on the quarter note, but it at the same time sounds like eight note.

Haiya just check this out,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_9LGpwpiXs&feature=related

the drummer playing the ride cymbal bell trick on the 1min35sec to 1min45sec

not really sure how they make it sound so good, is it they hit the bell on the "1", then the "n" they shift to hit just on the ride itself, then the "2" they shift back to the bell, then the "n" they shift down to the ride again?

Can someone just make a video to explain what the bell trick really is?

Yup, although I only have a computer speaker that can't play through volume 3, it sounds like he is playing all 1/4 notes on the bell and the "Ns" on the ride cymbal. To be accurate and consistent, keep your arm's movement minimal and use your wrist to shift the stick's position so that it alternates between the bell and the ride.

Check out 2:25 onwards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yirSQ7NiAJM). Can't see my wrist but you can see the stick's placement. The movement is very minimal just to ensure that I can hit the bell as accurately and as consistently (volume wise) as possible....hope this helps...

the quality of the audio is too bad , couldn't hear what the drummer was doing clearly . but what i think he is doing is just ...

X...X....X...X <--- bell
.....X(X)....X <--snare
XX.......XX <--bass drum

kinda simple pattern i know , but at least it sounds (and looks) like that to me .

or maybe you can try , playing 8th note on your right hand (ride hand) , beginning on the ride , then to the bell , and from there .

R = Ride
B = Bell

1 n 2 n 3 n 4 n | 1 n 2 n 3 n 4 n | 1 n 2 n 3 n 4 n | 1 n 2 n 3 n 4 n|
R B R B R B R B | R B R B R B R B | R B R B R B R B | R B R B R B R B|

Yup this is a Pattern I always love to do – Riding on a Ride – in this very manner

it sounds like he is playing all 1/4 notes on the bell and the "Ns" on the ride cymbal. To be accurate and consistent, keep your arm's movement minimal and use your wrist to shift the stick's position so that it alternates between the bell and the ride.

Yes it is Alvin – and it is you who taught me this Pattern when I was learning from you at Music Lab … now – I’m so used to it – I love to ride in this Manner..Hahhahaha

Those who plays this ride bell groove do continue posting, thx

PS:- Dark Heart: - - I will post the same thing here as above too.

I don get it, i thought the bell should be on the 1,2,3,4 , ride on the n

the standard normal way is bell on down beats and cymbal on up beats. but to create variations and different grooves or accents, you can do it reverse. or any kind of groove that you think suits whatever you're playing. there's no fixed pattern.
