reviews on sound proof materials at homes?

Hey guys,

Care to show any in depth explanations on having sound proof materials and why some materials functions well enough?:)

I'm not very knowledgeable with this thing either but as far as I heard and know , it's extremely expensive to soundproof a room. If you're in Singapore and have TV , watch Channel 5's News. It's filmed in a soundproof room.I've seen the room itself. It's a bloody complicated thing so...

You could buy those acoustic foams ( I call them sound absorbing foam ) and wallpaper your room with it and it would help definitely but it won't completely soundproof anything. If you don't know what the foam is , it looks like http://www.adfoam.com.au/images/CVTPU.jpg

Hope I helped a bit.

To soundproof something, the inner surface must be made irregular and soft, so that soundwaves will be deflected in many directions and a little of the soundwaves would be absorbed by the soundproofing material.

To soundproof a room the usual way is really expensive... a cheaper alternative exist: paste egg cartons all around your room, covering every space on the wall. The more layers the merrier. Of course this way your room is gonna look crap...

I wouldn't recommend that. Trust me. You wouldn't want bugs to live in the space inside.

My music room is soundproof of a 50% sound absorption at $1200. I got a special price cos the contractor is a friend of my uncle. But it's only the walls. Nothing was done to the ceiling and floor. I got a soundproof door for free.
Anyway, what the contractor did was like "pasting" layers of foams and thin wood. Like wood, foam, wood, foam and so on.

Hahaha I was tempted to do that egg carton thing but I can't get enough of those. What are other cheap materials to absorb some sound?

perhaps it's been too long since this question was asked... again.

search 'sound proof' or 'soundproofing' in the drums subforum (i think).

there are at least 3 threads with very detailed explanations, first hand descriptions, and pictures.

mods, please sticky those threads!

and just to clarify, egg cartons do not absorb sound. they are made of cardboard.

alot of sound 'leaks' out of doors, windows etc so if you want to reduce sound, those would be places you would want to dampen.

the best way of absorbing sound is to build a room within a room. materials of irregular density and AIR prevent sound waves from travelling.

the shape of the surface is not really a factor in sound proofing. those waffles shaped foam panels you see in audio shops are used for sound dampening, which is different from soundproofing. sound dampening reduces reflections of sound waves off surfaces, which affects the acoustics of a room. it does not prevent sound from passing through walls, etc.

im not an expert on sound, and most of what i know comes from whatever was already discussed on the soft forums :D
