Hi,

I´ve an old Strat that has seen some neglect and would like to restore /recondition it.

Any recommendations? Shops / people etc to go to?

Thanks

Now... this is what i normally do. I use normal guitar polish on all my guitars. For my guitars with nitro-cellulose finishes (like on Gibsons), i use some carnauba wax (Jim Dunlop has em) to polish it. For fretboard, convenience-wise, i usually use lemon oil to recondition the fretboard and to remove excess grime. However, other oils like linseed oil or light mineral oil can be used too. Its rumoured that lemon oil (industrially made) contains substances that eventually dries up the fretboard. As for frets, i´ll tap up the wood-region around the frets and polish it with metal polish (non-abrasive). Its better to use very minute amounts so that it doesn´t leek to the fretboard. If frets are seriously rusted up, i think using steel wool (Grade 0000) and use it to remove the rust from the frets. Remember to tape the wood-region too to prevent damage to wood. I think thats all I do to recondition and maintain my guitar.

And!! If your Strat has a maple neck, no oils is needed to recondition the fretboard. Maple fretboard is often laquered too so a little polish should do the trick. And for electronics, you may wana remove the scratchplate and clean all the contacts of the electronics with a electronic contact cleaner.

yyyyyyyyyyyyyyya. sandpaper. or filers.

EhHz... Anyone knows anything about this? Firstly, i personally and strongly discourage filing or sanding your fretboard. Why? The guitar´s fretboard is made of wood, if ya sand/file it, it´ll produce timber dust. And... if you guys know.... exotic wood dusts, like rosewood, maple, ebony when inhaled into your lungs are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). Thats why many luthiers use a mask when dealing with exotic woods and timber. I haven´t seen ANYONE sanding/filing the fretboard wood region for RECONDITIONING the fretboard. Unless you´re toking abt making scalloped fingerboards, filing/sanding is a no-no.

... i didn´t say file the fretboard. if you´d take the time to read what i wrote you´ll see ´some sandpaper if some of the wood´s in really bad condition´. not ´sand the fretboard´.

Sand wood where? How can sanding wood RECONDITION the guitar in anyway? Well, most of the guitar is made of wood, and usually only the fretboard and the internal regions is unfinished by laquer. So..... if you´re gonna SAND the wood in other regions, you´re gonna strip the laquer man. Could you specify WHERE THE HELL should sanding EVER take place in RECONDITIONING the guitar?

If you´re toking about relic-ing the guitar, i might agree.

.

alright repulse whatever. go play with the guitar you won´t get lung cancer with. the person asking this should understand and since you´re not that person this matter shall have to rest.

say the truth, if going to sand the lacquer for any unknown reason, could always use an apple peeler. Makes the job easier. But i have to agree with repulse, nv heard of sanding any wood on a guit b4.

Yea... wad an atee.... i´d really like to see how you "recondition" your guitar. U´d probably sand the finish off from gloss to satin.

A good Lemon oil to re-condition a dried fretboard.

Some good old rag and AUTOSOL or Brasso to rub those frets clean =) (use masking tape to tape up the fretboard n other parts first, exposin only the frets, then start polishin em)

A decent Guitar polish to clean ya body

And Zippo lighter fluid to clean any tough grime (careful, test to see if it reacts with ur guitar´s finish, otherwise, u finish )

There´s this superb book u can find in our national library "Dan Erlwine´s Guitar book" Sorry not too sure bout the spelling but he´s da repairman in www.thelespaulforum.com he da man =x

Cheers
