Resisting the overiding temptation!!!

Now this is a question i wish to ask ya comments about, i think everyone faces it...
We drool at gear as we look at them, wondering how great it will be if we have them in our collection. Then we set aside some cash for it to spend. Another day we step into another shop and we drool at yet another gear. We live our lives in frenzy of one gear to another.
We plot up our needs and objectives, but yet those needs are always changing. Expanding as we see more and more. The next thing is always more expensive, and we see our finances going lower and lower, unable to cope up with our upcoming needs.
We listen to other's talk, there is always a new model on the market that seems better. People are always boasting about the best gear in town, the most costly, the best quality. We look down at our pockets and wonder when we can top up for that. And it goes on and on......
Question i have is this, when do you know when enough is enough????

Actually, it's usually enough for most of us. Whether you want something is rather different from whether you need something (despite what marketing 101 says). You can look up at other specialized websites and you get the same question you pose... in TGP, SD, or many forums which have equipment as part of the discussion.

Maybe asking yourself a few questions would help:
1. Why do I want to buy this?
2. Do I really need this?
3. Should I spend the money on this?
4. Should I wait?
5. [Whatever question you can ask to assess the purchase]

I don't really think it'll ever be enough for most people. It's about personal expectations much more than the equipment itself. Even in real life, some people can live by taking buses, others can't live without a car to travel.

My 2 cents worth.

Yeap, been asking myself the questions many a times. Still, i drool over gear much!!! Hi Blueprintstudios, you r a producer yourself??? I have a family to feed as well, but not a big one!!!! Thank god!!

Learn to tweak with what you have first and PLAY PROPERLY before talking about gears la....talk so much have so many good gear but can't play for fuck for what...Singaporean guitarists all like that, talk so much but when come to playing, only can do so little.

I stop spending cos I may not need to buy gear by access it this way:

I set goals and hard goals. I told myself I won't by any guitar till

1) my guitar looks like SRV

2) I play like any of the greats (steve vai, joe satch.... etc)

3) it is broken if not I won't replace it

I don't even use pedal because I am plain lazy.

What use is there to own a couple of guitars but can only play on one at a time unless of course you can train to play two neck at once.

For amp wise... you either get the best or you start saving... as a result I just save but don't spend as each time something better comes out... unless of course my gear break down.

The bottom line is to analyse yourself and ask is it justifiable to pamper urself or invest in somethings which can get u profitable returns...

Think about it...

it's not a local phenomenon. :P

but yes, skills tend to be more important imo than gear is.

Erm. I think you got the wrong guy. I don't really remember what I post though, if you have a link to my 'policy', then post it here.

hi all, just to share a thread i started some time ago on "how to stop/control GAS"...

most importantly, don't be a victim of peer-pressure, if someone owns this great and expensive gear, doesn't mean you need to follow.

pressure them back with the things you can play. e.g. go finish learning all the legendary songs by Jimi Hendrix, you don't need a lot of gear to do that...

if you're a guitarist:

you don't need to buy a PGM to play Paul Gilbert's songs
you don't need to buy a JEM to play Steve Vai's songs
you don't need to buy a JS to play Satch's
you don't need to buy a Musician to play Petrucci's
you don't need to buy a PRS to play Santana's

you don't even need to buy a Jazz guitar just because you want to try to play Jazz songs, it can be done even on a cheap acoustic guitar... don't give yourself excuses like you need to try the heavier gauge strings on a Jazz guitar to play Jazz....

the same goes for effects, amps, and accessories.

play more (songs), trade less (gears)...

Ermm, i thot that if you can play like the Greats, you would be endorse with all the great gears!!! So i will be waiting to see your endorsements coming thru one day!!!
And pls don't insult Singaporeans that bad, check out overseas musicians, they are even worse in spending on gears!!!!!!!! We asians are considered extremely calculative in money.. trust my words for being a music retail salesman..

hmm interesting post ..

What gear would you recommend?

Any guitar made in USA, Japan, Korea or China is good. Depending on your cash flow try and find an instrument that has all the tools you will need to express yourself. Same goes for amp and pedals, try and find gear that will allow you to create the sounds you want without spending a whole lot of cash, unless you have that kind of money to spend.

Throughout the years I've found that an inexpensive guitar will accomplish the same task a real expensive guitar can. Sure owning a real expensive $1200 to $3000 dollar guitar is nice and fun to brag to your friends about, but must likely you can play the same music on a lower priced guitar. Owning a guitar is not a popularity contest. So save that extra money for guitar lessons, other gear or food.

What kind of guitars do you use?

Currently I'm using Ibanez RG modal guitars. One of the best playing out of the bunch is a RG321MHMOL. It's the $249 RG321 that has a fixed bridge.

I sanded the Mahogany finish off and left it wood grain (which I like better); then I put my Seymour Duncan TB-6 zebra (cream & black) in the bridge and a SH-6 zebra (cream & black) in the neck. I have a 500k-volume pot where the tone pot would be and a 3-way selector where the volume pot would go. Very simple Korean made Ibanez customized to my liking.

I also have other assortments of Ibanez guitars that are RG modals. RG350ex and some RG570's. All my Ibanez guitars have Seymour Duncan TB-6 zebra (cream & black) in the bridge and a SH-6 zebra (cream & black) in the neck.

what a guy..:)

As the Buddha said :" Desires are endless, and only thru slowly curbing it thru wisdom can the door of your salvation be found."

At the end of the day,if you are good, a TGM sounds better than Fender.
and if you got no feel,an Ibanez sounds worst than your dog's wailings.
