repaint

has anyone repaint their guitar?

as in the WHOLE

or

CHIP OFFS.

How much is the price? Does G77 do the job?

And.... does it really change the tone of the guitar? even if its just a chip off part repainting....

or does it really change the tone when you repaint the WHOLE guitar?

alamak, use sandpaper to sand la, unless u're daring enough to be like me to chisel off the lacquer and paint. thn spray using spray cans and lacquer spray can already loh. i've got an instruction manuel, u can pm me for one if u need.

u cud use paint remover ... forgot about the brand ... think can get it from NTUC or DIY shop ... strip it down it original wood work, it wont hurt your wood much ...

first must know what guitar he using.
paint remover/stripper only works on guitars with nitro finishes.

usually if your guitar is like those epiphone/fender/car paint/poly finishes, best way to remove it is using a heatgun and scrap it off.
the normal strippers you buy at shops wont do anything to poly finishes.
you need those very high strength ones, which require you to wear gloves, high ventilation, respirator etc.

ah why repaint when you can get a replacement one

ah since we on the subject I gota MIM black strat body $150...   :P

i seriously advice against DIY. Too darn difficult to do. Don't ask me how I know I spend $300+ on equipment just to figure it out. The best choice is obviously guitar77 for poly finishes, but still there will be some flaws as evident in the POT guitars. I wouldn't consider anywhere else in SG for poly refinishing. Even guitar77 send their guitars to the POT factory in Thailand for the luthier to do.

crozzfire: your lacquer is actually hard enough without a catalyst? Did you get it specially mixed in an automobile shop or something? I tried normal lacquer already.. can scrape it off with my fingernail since it's soft. and it had been vapouring off for 3 weeks before that.

Sanding is easier said than done. Unless you are of course doing an opaque finish after removing the existing one then it wouldn't matter that much. You need to block sand in different grades again and again or you will get uneven spots which are EXTREMELY OBVIOUS under a clear coat.

A heat gun WILL leave you char marks in the wood if you're not careful. Also, the melted paint/lacquer/whatever may actually seep down into the pores of the wood and it's there to stay.

Stairwaytoheaven: PM me if you need more specific info. I've been experimenting and researching on guitar finishes with my PRS as my guinea pig =D there's so much info it can be compiled into a book. My stand is to still have it done professionally or leave it as it is. Now how big is the problem actually?

sorry just realized there is band by that name...sorry fellas. 8O 8O

I rather live with paint chips than getting my 20 coat automotive paint....aha you get instant muffler

Oh ya for those not familiar with 'paint removers' please be WARNED its highly corrosive....not funny at all...will eat anything plastic and stain everthing else.BAD for the Enviroment !!!

For small chips exposing wood ...just use super glue to fill chip and u got instant coat that will protect from moisture sipping in...you can also fill matching paint -dry- then sand it down with 1000grit - nice buff with polish..walla pro job ...DIY style!!
