Relatively unknown guitarists

This post will be about relatively unknown but skillful guitarists (these guys may be better than Vai, I think they certainly are). To start things off, here's my list:

1.) Bumblefoot aka Ron Thal www.bumblefoot.com If you're into shred, try Chopin Fantasie and Guitars Suck! If you can't find mp3s of these songs, try powertabs to get an idea.

2.) German Schauss www.germanschauss.com Influenced by Malmsteen and Gilbert. Incredible picking speed, neo-classical.

3.) Shawn Lane (RIP) www.shawnlane.com Jazz-fusion... You have been warned! Known as the most technical guitarist that has ever walked on this planet. Here's something from his official bio: "Rock stars like Kirk Hammett and George Lynch, staying at the legendary Memphis Peabody Hotel while on tour, caught The Willys in the act and spread the word about Shawn's amazing talents. He once mesmerized Billy Gibbons, who literally fell off his chair when hearing Shawn, and blew away Ted Nugent in an on-stage riff duel."

4.) Buckethead www.bucketheadland.com An avant-garde shredder, known as "Slash's replacement" in the new Guns N' Roses. Wears a white plastic mask and a KFC bucket with "Funeral" written on it. FYI, "funeral" is an anagram for "real fun". Was Paul Gilbert's student. Has recorded under the name Death Cube K, which is an anagram for Buckethead.

5.) Mattias IA Eklundh www.freakguitar.com He is the vocalist and guitarist for Freak Kitchen. I found this on Favored Nations: UK Guitarist raves: "Eklundh's ear for melody is spot on, even during his most avant-garde moments, and an insane cover of "Smoke on the Water" is just the tip the iceberg. Faster than Malmsteen, smoother than Michael Lee Firkins and, dammit, better than Vai - this is undoubtedly the future of this style of guitar playing".

6.) Luis Moreno http://www.luismoreno.com/index-old.htm

7.) Allen "ROBOT" Van Wert http://www.musichopper.com/main.html Allen resembles Buckethead, but he is way better. Very impressive.

All of the guys above are multi-genre, some of you may have heard about them, others may not. Feel free to add more...

Cheers

nice list...

check out these guys too...

Don Ross - acoustic guitar wizard

Phil Keaggy - very diverse, been performing since the 60's...

Danny Gatton - been called the 'World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist'

Marc Ribot - avant-garde guitarist...

A couple more:

John 5 (a much better guitar-player than he lets on with Marilyn Manson)

Guthrie Govan (best all-rounder I've heard)

How could I have forgotten Guthrie Govan!!! Yeah he's the best all-rounder there is... Dude works for a guitar magazine, writing columns and tablature, has a band called Asia... I heard that he has tabbed and played Malmsteen, Vai etc very accurately.

John 5... Tele-freak! He has worked with David Lee Roth before, and he was different from his former MM bandmates... He doesn't do booze or drugs. I heard someone described his music as "hillbillies on crack"... He's trying to get a spot in the G3 tour, not sure if it will ever work out... A very lucky man, he's married to one very hot woman

I wish Bumblefoot, IA and Guthrie Govan would form a guitar trio and tour the world... I know that they have gathered together once at Tone Merchants. Oh yes if you guys are interested in GG, head down to http://www.tonemerchants.com and scroll down to the bottom right corner. You will see 2 links to GG vid clips...

Cheers :)

Isn't this Allen "ROBOT" Van Wert guy from Guitarbattle way back?

He's ridiculously fast and technical... but his pride's bigger than J Lo's butt.

Anyway, these guys really deserve wayyy more attention than many of the so called guitar hereos of today.

Another guitarist for you all to check out, Tony Smotherman... I discovered him through Jemfest...

Here are some quotes from other guitarists about him:

Marty Friedman - (Megadeth,Cacophony) www.martyfriedman.com
"Great playing on your cd,best of luck!!!"

Francesco Fareri - Independent Artist - www.FrancescoFareri.com
"Incredible playing, incredible feeling, incredible phrasing, incredible technique! A really complete musician!"

Ron Thal - www.bumblefoot.com
"Tony is not a very good player, but he dresses well. I specifically like his shoes."Tony Rules! - Bumblefoot (aka Ron Thal)

Don't believe Ron Thal! He has this weird thing about shoes! He likes to check out ppl's shoes, and on a Sweet Child O Mine cover with Most Precious Blood, he said something like "I hate wearing my shoes"... Lol, crazy idiot...

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - don't think he is that unknown... but i really feel he is under appreciated... he was mayers classmate at berkley if i not wrong... i really love his song " last goodbye"... simple yet moving...
