refretting

ya guys got any idea how much it cost to regret the whole neck for a 25.5 inch scale length guitar? Say if were to find a local luthier to do the job? For an electric.

No idea, I'm expecting around $120-$250.

You should check with Sound Alchemy, Malcolm, Beez, TYMC. Send them an e-mail or give them a call for a price quote.

Depends what kind of guitar also. Guitars with bolt on necks would be cheaper cos you can remove the neck and work on the guitar, others would be more expensive. Also depends on what type of frets you wanna put on the guitar. Stainless steel frets would definitely be more labour intensive and cost more. Expect to pay around 200-300+

the biggest question I ask people before they want to do a refret, do you need one?

sometimes, a fret levelling job can solve the problem. way cheaper too. Refret IMO is usually necessary after using the same guitar for 2 years and the frets have either no more room for levelling. either that or a change in fret size.

stainless steel frets change the tone of your guitar. it is a big change. not necessarily for the better. some like it, some don't. yes fret material plays a part in the tone equation too.

over the years I have seen some really good and some really shitty refrets. only 2 places I would go to, Guitar Connection or SV. look at the level of detail and compare.

IMHO, always bring delicate repairs to the right people to get it done right the first time. no point finding the cheapest guy who can do the job. you don't want sharp fret ends, popping frets or choking do you?

oh btw if you want to know the charges for GC:
Rosewood $250
Maple $350 inclusive of lacquer
Set neck +$50
Bound neck +$100

number of frets don't really matter.

The + options vary from guitar to guitar. Refrets include fret levelling and general set up with 1 year warranty.

if you want to see Wayne's work, head to GC's facebook page and check out some of the refret photo albums.

Hi bro, the state that I was mentioning looks like this

I got quite a few of such all over the fret board. Mine is ebony by the way model is Edwards gt-130 fr neck through .
As I pretty love this and its quite unsightly to me, was thinking of repairing it. As such, this falls under which catogrey?

my advice? Fret levelling. what happens is that you need to follow the radius of your board, plain down the frets accordingly and finally crown and polish.

I will never recommend refretting unless entirely necessary. first, it's not cheap, second, I don't like the idea of loosening the fret slots unless absolutely necessary.

these are jumbo sized frets right? I believe there is still a lot of room left to level. hmm, still better to see it in person.

ebony same charge as rosewood. let Wayne know what you need to do.
