Hi guys,

any of you have recording softwares that are good?

I remember one of my teachers in school ever had a software that could record guitar sounds via mic and even add effects like overdrive etc to it..

any idea whats the easiest way to obtain one?

should try AUDACITY.
try searching it out at youtube.
theres a link to download it for free.
you can record ur guitar tru mic i suppose and you could add effects to ur guitar
or vocals.its kinda cool.
i have it =D

http://soft.com.sg/forum/gear-computer-sw/3937-music-production-software-list-read-first-post.html

theres couple of software in the thread above which are free and legal. The thread has most of the more popular softwares for music production and processing

If no one mentioned bout free, then most likely one has to pay for the software.

across most internet forums, its a taboo to ask where to get free stuff that are released commercially, aka need to pay to get type. Most of the time, either will get slam or kick out..

in time of doubt, after reading the thread above, try www.google.com to find out more info on those softwares

what if i want to incorporate drums into the software system? Or is it like guitar pro where you have to manually input the setting? sorry, quite new to this..

also, i understand that recording thru mic, the result wld have slight frequency interferences, does it?

since we're at this, does anyone know where to get a software just like garage band?which is free and downloadable?

Check out REAPER too. Its FREE

Just because they're not like other proprietary software vendors (in that they have a true trial version) does not mean their flagship product is free.

REAPER is not free. You get to try it for what it's worth - for as long as you need to in order for you to decide if it's good to go.

Audacity for ease of use. Quite straightfwd. Gd for noobs.

This is going to be a little harsh coming from an open-source software advocate, but Audacity is just too ugly to work with. I recommend Wavosaur instead for an audio editor (not so much of a hard disk recorder/tracker): http://www.wavosaur.com/

If you're on Mac, a free Pro Tools alternative: http://www.sae.edu/en-gb/pages/80/Ardour_-_SAE_Edition

toneport is just an external audio interface

It act as an external soundcard which you connect your instrument and let it communicate with your computer.

The connection is just the beginning. You will need the softwares to record, arranged etc, to do music

For incoporating drums, either you can program drum beats using midi or if able to find drum loops, you can insert into the various programs and record your instrument over it. Incoporating drum beat(without doing actual drum recording) into your music, either you find existing drum loops or you program your own using midi. For more info on this, google for "drumloops" or "drum programming using midi"

Usually if you get external audio interface, it will come with "lite" version of software which you can use together with the hardware audio interface to record.

thanks for the heads up, but im still pretty confused by all the jargon! XD i guess if i really wanna record drums i have to get a laptop, install software, then record drums right?

bah, so tedious! maybe i should go for live recording or multi-track instead..

drum recording is another different level. You will need more things and more time spent to get into it.

if you are just starting out, 1) using existing drum loops which you can find online, 2) search for backing track online and use it.

mutil tracking or live recording, its stil doing recording. To do a piece of music, its like playing lego. Fitting in part by part(multi tracking), arranged, edit what so ever to get the end product.

If you wanna find out more, here are some keyword for a start to google on

1) audio interface
2) DAW(digital audio workstation)
3) midi programming
4) drum loops
5) vst/vsti

the above 5 will have enough infos via google search to get a basic idea on whats needed to do a piece of music using the comp

i see, i probably wont be doin the drum loop thing.. it restrict the creative flow of the song, i guess im very picky when it comes to drum patterns

Hmmm... didnt know that. I've been using it for more than a year though. Didnt pay a cent for this incl the VST downloads, effects, etc.
And happy as a clam with what it can do!

Agree. Didnt want to 'slam' Audacity lest it puts some ppl off. LOLz
