Recorder

I'm planning to get a recorder to record my practice and playing. The H4n is quite expensive. Is the H2 good? What is the different between them?

Just upgraded from a 2 to a 4n. Key advantages I have noticed on the 4n:

- can use remote to start and stop
- has own speaker
- menu navigation is better (has some keys on front to jump to various items - also has a better thumb dial for moving between menu options)
- can handle two inputs in addition to built in mike (so can have four channels = two from the built in mike and two from the inputs)

No difference in quality (I have used both for recording practices in the studio). The 2 is lighter and more compact.

Stay loud.

sorry to hijack but lets say if i were to use a recorder to record a jamming session, where should it be placed?

How's the quality of the recording with the in-built mics of both the H2 and H4 at loud jam sessions? Is there any distortion in the recording?

Where to place the recorder?

Hmm... you can move around the room and hear where is the best spot. To get a balance stereo image, best would be to point at the drumset so that the drums will sit right in the middle of your recording.

Distortion?

- If your band is playing too loud, try to make them play softer.
- Move the recorder further from the band.
- H4n has 2 XLR mic input, attach dynamic to it instead of using the built-in mic which are very sensitive.
