Try the VOX Valvetronix range.. They were quite affordable at the recent sale at city music.. not sure how much they go for now?

yes yes the vox are great.tried my friend's vox and i was impressed.sounds great if you run some stompboxes too.

I would recommend the BOSS ME-20 for starters. A good amp would be the Roland Cube. A Hughes & Kettner would be great too. They're available at the Pianoman Shop @ Bukit Timah Plaza.

Funny why nobody mentions starter packs?
Anyway, you should check out the starter packs. This includes everything you need to start guitaring

1) Guitar (ah-but-of-course!) with strap
2) Amp
3) cables
4) pick
5) Some book with CD

I think most starter packs are selling for just above $300. Check it out at any guitar shops.

Hey! You're right...sory. Where I got the idea that you dont have a guitar yet, I dont know. Sigh... working too hard I guess... eyes also blurrrr. Sorry...

Then I think you really have to think about what kind of music you like to play .. and whether you gig and stuff ... before comitting to amp and effects...

try find 2nd hand vox tonelab SE or Boss GT 10
forget about the amps after all when you do gigs u don't bring along your amps right?

^ i disagree, i used to think that way.
i think it's best to get a good amp to get the sound you want, this way you'll feel more motivated when you practice and you'll be more sure of your sound. in my case, i use a very sucky amp and a multi-effect thinking that i could simulate most sounds. However when I gig, my sound always comes out different and its very demoralizing. yeah and +1 to vox! it's a good effect pedal :D

my 2cents (:

during your gig if you have a boss GT 10 and a good amp and the sound sounds diff from your good pedal and lousy amp why is it demoralizing I mean the sound should sound diff but it should be good because you have a good amp and a good pedal. You see he has a tight budget so he can't afford a good amp and a good pedal so why not just get a good pedal 1st when you have the money then get a good amp. That's what I did and no regrets

haha! i was thinking along the lines of practicing. when i practice and i can't hear the kind of tone i want, i'll get super irritated and i'll just stop practicing. but i agree, a pedal will come in handy first as compared to an amp, and when you get the amp, make sure it's a good one! haha the one i use is quite bad and i feel so demoralized playing my effect through it most of the times.

Been there done that.Usually these good pedals work great with lousy amps. They never really link up good with good amps.Reason being that the eq difference from a lousy practice amp and a gigging amp is that the gigging amp has more response in the eq when set.

So to ts it would be best to get an amp first since you are starting out.Its easier to tweak just an amp with great on board efx rather than tweaking an amp and multifx at the same time.
