Music genre : Metal/Rock/Once in a while blues :)

I've been compressor searching too. Perhaps I can share with you.

What I got so far were:
- Rocktron Big Crush Compressor
- Marshall ED-1 Compressor
- Boss Compression Sustainer (CS-3)
- MXR Super Comp
- MXR Dyna Comp
- Barber Tonepress
- Goosonique Citrus
- Toadworks Mr. Squishy
- Maxon CP-9 Pro+ / CP101

Maybe you can check out those mentioned above.

I think fellow SOFTies will recommend the Barber Tone Press.

Best of luck!

i second (third? :S) the barber tone press. pretty expensive compared to the MXRs and stuff but well worth it imo.

my personal take on the tone press and how i'm using it:

i find that when i turn it on, it makes my lead tone really nice and smooth. my OD and distortion becomes perhaps a bit too compressed for what i like, but its still a good sound.
this is regardless even if you turn down the blend and sustain knob... imho, may not be good for metal or hard rock.

how i use my tone press...
i place it after my OD, and set my OD to be a higher volume than when the tonepress is on. so when i play softer parts both are on. when i play louder parts i turn off the tonepress.
strange, really. i dont even know why i keep the tone press at times, but i have not experimented with the inner tweakable knob and placing it at different places yet and i'm loving the blend knob's tone as well. just... not metal...

Try the analogman bi-comp. It has done wonders for me and should have plenty enough to cover whatever you need it for.

compressor doesnt work with music genre...

send a signal in, it does its job, thats to compress. It doesnt care if its metal tone, rock tone, clean tone or no tone. Its supposed to do its job of compressing the signal as long it received something at the input, not changing the signal to another form(totally different from the original sound, eg, clean/distortion, clean/overdrive) for different music genre at the output.

its not like distortion overdrive etc, which totally change the fundamental sound of your guitar and thus able to use it on various forms of guitar based music genre.

There are no compressor that decide the genre, its the combination of the mode of gain(from amp, pedals etc) and the setting of the compressor(how it affect the gain after compression, depending on the compressor circuit/controls/parameters setting) that do so.

imho

Now thats sound science Pathein, and i second that! Since there are many compressors out there in the market, perhaps u may wanna work out a budget/criteria? But imho u just gotta go out there and try them out (the list of recommendations) personally and use ur ears to judge what suits you.....

try use a high gain tube amp or pedal with the tone press, try tweak and tweak, and u then decide whether or not u like. i don't.

Barber Tone Press is well worth the money.... Doesn't effect the natural tone.

I play high gain stuff and it works wonders. Simple 3 knobs with a tone knob that will give you great versatility.

get the goose citrus or the maxon cp101 compressor, both are optical based, which are better imo cos they are more transparent.
