Hi all

I've been playing bass for about 2 years ago, and i'm looking to purchase my second one. Started out with a beginner's SX from davis. I dont really have any idea about what kind I want, but if you have any good basses in mind for someone my level then please do comment. I mostly play jazz to rock, or sometimes hard rock. Nothing too heavy.

Thanks! :)

i don't think there's any bass pegged to one's playing capacity when it comes to being deserving

i have the following 3 basses in mind when it comes to value for money (tone & playability out-weigh everything else for me):

SR300_CA_1P_01.gif

Ibanez SR300: Great playability & tone for the money. this bass represents ibanez's resurgence in its SR series.

Sterling Ray 34: This is bottom end thunder.

Yamaha BB414: I refer to the BB414 as a 'delivery' bass; it simply delivers good tones.

Look at what bands you like and what basses their bassist use. If you like their bass sounds, that would give you an idea what type of bass you should get, before you look at brands etc.

The 3 basses that subversion recommended all sound completely different from one another. You will still have to decide what sort of sound you want.

If in doubt, a Passive P/J would probably be my recommendation.

Ehh, most of the bands i listen to (jrock) use ESP, although some do use Fender and Sadowsky.
I'm planning to go to Swee Lee and test a few basses out, but I still want to have a better idea of what I'm looking for.

Anyways my budget is about 1.5 k. Does that help?

I've been playing for more than 10yrs and I still like my Yamaha BB615.

Actually if you really like your tone of your current SX, there is no reason to 'upgrade' to a another bass. Unless you are looking for bass with different pickups, or more strings (ie 5 or 6 string bass). Or you have the cash to go so-called boutique bass.

If u like the SX, than a fender cij jazz or p, will work nicely not too far off. if u wanna try something new the musicman is one of the most recorded bass tone beside fender, and yamaha has a very sterile bass tone, u can;t go wrong with 'em

hmm those brands being used in jrock is not surprising because of their popularity in japan in general.

you've been playing bass for some time, the best way is to pick up a bass, listen to how it sounds when YOU are playing it, and how it feels like to play it. by now you'd have an idea of what's nice and what you like. you'd be surprised when you find that it's different from what other people like. so its ultimately your call. consider everything, the looks, the colour, design, feel good factor. all that matters. after all, you're spending hard earned money, so be sure to stretch your dollar.

1.5k is a decent budget. go into the 2nd hand market and get something really killer for that price. anyone who owns a bass with 1.5k resale value would know how to take care of his gear.

I actually like SX basses. They are really cheap and good. In fact, most of the gigging bass players I know all have one SX bass as a spare guitar. Have a nice set up on it and you are ready to go. I would suggest swapping out the pickups and probably get a better amp. $1.5k is a big budget to play around with.
