Alot of factors can affect humming.

Depending on your circumstances a close by TV, computer, Bad wiring even fluorescent lights can cause your guitar to hum.

That aside i know several individuals who take the hum of a single coil as part of its characteristic.

There are certain spots from your amp at which u stand that after abit of experimenting the hum will decrease significantly not entirely though.

If you really want noiseless there are several hum cancelling pickups out there. Lace sensor holy grails and as the others have mentioned i would second the emgs.

Dimarzio's Area series is really quiet. They are pretty clear sounding too.

Humbucker wise... some Bartolini passives are dead quiet + clear sounding. Kind of dull sounding though. Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell?

digging up this thread again, are the Area series quiet when in positions 1, 3 or 5 and under high gain?? what about the Lace sensors?? or are they only quiet in positions 2 and 4?
