question

In my humble opinion, most people can sing decently but to sing really well and move people is a totally different issue altogether.

Don't even get me started on performing, in which you need to touch people aurally and visually.

I am pretty sure we all have seen or even personally know some singers whom after they finish singing the song, we'll instantly think "Hey, he/she is born to sing!!".

To a certain extent, somebody can be trained to sing better than others but like many other things in life, it is but a subjective matter.

My former boss was an avid Canto-pop karaoke king but to him 'Twist & Shout' by The Beatles was just irritating noise. Hell, I don't even think he knows who John Lennon was!

:)

like to say a bit because i like singing.

I think is that singing is a talent thing and the person can train as well. Art is a practice. if the person can't sing, Just practice and he or she will get it for sure in one day.

Anyone can sing. And like anything in life, there is talent yes, but it's no substitute for hard work.

Have you seen the movie Music and Lyrics? Neither of the lead actors could sing before they made that movie. So they went and learnt, and they sound like naturals now. Of course they would have had quite talented (and expensive) vocal trainers, but it shows that anyone can sing.

Another example is me .. I spent 6 months making noises that couldn't really be described as singing until the hard work finally paid off. I am totally talentless at singing, so all my results are 100% training.

i'd probably say there's a bit of talent involve. singing never came across my mind until sec 3, when i imitated the song of accidentally in love and my classmates started praising me to sing. nvr looked back since...

but no matter what, you still got to train. when it comes to being the best in something, it just requires 1% talent, but 99% determination

I'll just ask you instead what you would prefer to believe... :D cause seriously either way work, just that the gifted, or so call naturals, had it easier at the beginning of it all.

End of the day all those established vocalists you see recording albums with big record names got there through hard work.

Here's a comment from Tom Payne, who works with Brett Manning (the Singing Success course):

"YES!

Anybody can learn how to sing...

From operating the Live Chat service on the website, I have encountered this a few times... "I want to be a singer, but people tell me I can't learn how to sing" Also, Simon from American Idol often says "You aren't a good singer and you never will be"

Both of those statements are completely false. Singing is not rocket science, it is simply speaking on pitch with tone and emotion. If you can talk then you can sing. You just need to discover the correct techniques, and since you are reading this right now you are obviously in the right place. Your vocal cords are muscles and singing is a muscle coordination. It is muscle response memory. It is just like learning how to shoot a basketball or swing a golf club. Anybody can learn how to do it, you just need the right methods.

You can do it..."

sports needs exercise...
vocals needs exercise as well..

sports are performed on the pitch...
vocals are performed on stage...

hence, it's advisable to practice practice practice... i bet everything else needs practice practice practice... take proper learning techniques and you can succeed.

I agree that singing can be trained, but without some natural talent, you can't really go far. The most you will be is a well-trained singer with a weedy voice.

I've heard some people's voice that sounded like they have lots of potential, strong vocals, nice tone, just that they lack the techniques and training to polish their voice. these people are definitely blessed with a good voice just that they are not that interested in singing so they don't let their voices reach the full potential.

Then i've heard a lot, most of which can be heard on Superstar singing shows, whose voices are totally pitch correct and technically good, but just don't strike any chord whatsoever. Their voices can be best described as mediocre, and all the training in the world ain't gonna make a mediocre singer into Mariah Carey.

I would really like to have some vocal lessons but I just can't bear to fork out the money for it, so up to now I don't even know what I'm doing is right or not. I think singing is a gift, either u have it or u don't. And if you don't, then you can still sound passably good, or even technically good with lots of training.

NO NO NO :)

That's not true at all. It doesn't matter how weedy your voice is now, you can train it to sound great. Talent is not part of the equation, no matter what Simon Cowell says. A weak voice is simply an untrained voice, and training will turn it around entirely.

In fact, talent often works against you by making you arrogant. It's the people who put in the hard work that have become the great singers we know in our time. It's the ones with a bit of talent and no training that are the forever mediocre singers. Some of them are good entertainers, but their singing is nothing compared to a trained voice.

Dood,

If you have a voice, you can sing.
If you want to sing well, you have to work.. meaning practice lah
But I don't think it's a training thing, cos I know trained singers with the most godawful tones and pitch scores that takes away a LOT of vocal feel
I don't think it's a talent thing either, cos I know talented people who couldn't be arsed to continue singing and their voice sadly deteriorates..

I guess my answer is that it's both. :)
Just depends on how much work and commitment you wanna put in practice, and how much or how well you integrate yourself into its workings, and not the training integrating into your voice.

NO NO NO :)

It's the people who put in the hard work that have become the great singers we know in our time.

If we view the voice like our body, then look at athletes, they need to train intensively to maintain their body so as to excel at their sport, and a good body certainly require training and exercising, but that doesn't mean that any Tom Dick and Harry can be world-class athletes.

You do need certain God-given abilities and talent in order to really excel, though no doubt without training, all the talent in the world ain't gonna help. Imagine if Tom Cruise wanted to be a basketball star. With his 1.7m height, it's just not gonna happen.

Some people are just not suited to be singers, and however much you train them you won't get them to excel.

To quote Simon, "It's like asking me to train a one-legged man for the Olympics", or something along that line.

Simon's job is to insult people.. he doesn't know anything about singing other than what sounds good and what doesn't. He's a great entertainer with a good ear, but that's all.

I agree that someone whose voice is disabled in a similar way to a one legged man is disabled for running would never become a great singer. But that accounts for maybe 1% of the population? The other 99% have fantastic potential. The only things they need are a good attitude and a good teacher.

I personally think that to sing well one needs to train to a certain extent. Most of the time that extent is extended very far.

However, i personally think that at the end of the day, no matter how well or bad you sing, you must enjoy yourself singing, then hopefully others will.
