Question on snares

Well recently i have been looking at snares via the net n listen to it on youtube.
The snares that caught my eyes are brass snares, so i have this question coming: Is there a difference between brass snares and hammered brass snares? Coz all i see is that brass is smooth, while hammered brass has some 'pattern' to it. By sight, i would prefer hammered brass.

Also, im more of a rock/metal drummer ( sort of.. juz got into metal not long ago..) , so i saw two snares that sound great but not sure which would do the job better. The snares are Ludwig Black Beauty With Imperial Lugs ( not tube ones as i dun realli lyk the prolong resonance ) and Mapex Black Panther Hammered Brass.

Thanks in advance xD :)

I just want to let u know abt the "Kenny Aronoff" signature snares. The model is "KA145". One of my favourites snares.

Check it out!

USADRUMMER: oh ok haha thx. yea i found out that metal requires a more 'shallow' and bright sounding snare =X so probably someting that is 12" or 13" in diameter xD

ZachDrummer: oo ok thx i will check it out soon :-D

Danny Carey uses a 14"x8", so it's not an absolute must that you use a snare 12"-13" diameter.

Yes, the difference between a non-hammered and hammered is minimal. Most people can't tell. It'll be slightly drier and focused, but proper tuning and the right heads will land you at that sound too.

Would you pay a $100 more for the hammered version just for it to look better?

After listening closely to the snare sounds, i still prefer the hammered version because of 1 ting. The normal brass version has longer resonance as compared to the hammered brass version. I prefer a 'tighter' snare with short resonance, and is punchy xD so i tink i will still stick to the hammered version, unless the long resonance of the normal version is due to different tuning =X since they are two different snares =X

oo. ok haha. hmm then perhaps i would choose the smooth version of the Ludwig BB xD since the resonance can be controlled xD thx for the info =) Oh yea and the 12"/13" snare was an idea i tot of when i saw the band Lamb Of God, where Chris Adler used a 12"x5.5" snare =) sounds pretty sweet xD

And i hv checked out the Kenny Anoroff snare xD wow the 14x5 is v versatile =) can tune up high as well as low n punchy xD so cool xD

oo thx alot xD that was a realli good explanation n advice =D hmm.. the onli problem i have now would probably be the effort i have to put in to tune the snare whenever i change style in music, since the snare sound of both my styles are different, unless i choose to play a deep fat snare sound in metal xD

I'm not really good with snares & it's specific hardware.

It's really more to personal preference to how u like the sound you want it to be as with the additional info on the types of heads & others. The reason I like the Kenny Aronoff signature snare is bcos I manage to get my hands on it & try different types of tuning fm low to the high. I managed to get the sound I wanted w/o the hassle of going abt more details into other aspects of hardware.
