Question about Vocal? Ask here

I realized there are a lot of amateurs such like me who're experiencing difficulties in expressing and singing in their fullest expressions.

Just a question corner for everyone to come together to talk about similar problems and a solution to all.

hi! great initiative! so first of all, thanks for the offer!

i'd like to ask, how do i sing without frantically gasping for more air to go on. like is it due to me having weaker air intake or what? some times like i've sang for a while, i would feel slight dizziness cuz of that. :( total amatuer.

Ah good thread! Thought I'd chip in some advice as a vocal coach.

Soul Asylum: If we consider all 'air' related problems, it boils down to 3 primary factors

1) Rate of air intake
2) Volume of air retention
3) Rate of air usage

The most common 'air' related problem my students have is the 3rd one. You can do self-assessment in this area but having a palm in front of your mouth when you sing. If you feel gusts of air when you switch between words and notes, you are using too much air. With the palm still in front you, you can consciously cut down on the air output until you eliminate the 'gusting'.

There are obviously other related issues with this, but I'll only share this much for now.

Hi thanks a lot for the insight Necrome. So as from what u've stated, we're supposed to sing in a way whereby we dont let out too much air at one go right? i've recorded my singing with ur advise and i think my singing did improve a little bit more now. the dizziness too has subsided significantly or close to none too.

huge thanks and i hope other members share their doubts too. its a fantastic way to learn =)

Air can be used to shape tones, so it's not necessary that least air usage = best.

Even though that's the case, it is always good to start out by learning how to use as little air as possible to project a good sound. Some people have a habit to let out gusts of breath when they change from note to note or from word to word, that is technically a waste of air, so yea, it's not wise to do that unless you are trying to achieve a special sound with that.

How do I get rid of my swallow voice habit when singing.

I realise the major root problem of my singing projection are i tend to swallow my voice while singing the tunes. When going up, it feel like the voice went to the back of the head instead of forward. But it seem to sound forward abit when at lower notes. Though i will still be swallowing my voice at lower register position.

I hope to push forward instead of backward.

Jianrong: There are specific vocal exercises to project your voice outwardly at all ranges. I don't think I should reveal them openly here though =) It's about figuring out where your vocal placement is, and learning how to shift and focus your sound.

Ardentash: Not necessarily so! Ranges are not restricted to certain registers. You can be singing high notes with a 'chesty' voice, or singing low notes with a head voice, everything else in between and more.

Vibrato

Have Brett Manning's disc on Mastering Vibrato and I always try to listen attentively... at least until he starts talking. So I tried googling it but dozed off & got drool all over the keyboard upon being confronted by the endless blocks of text each with a different get-vibrato-quick method.

That kind of learning seemed pretty ineffective, so here's my question:

HOW DO I DO A VIBRATO?

Thanks in advance babes ;) (& a very merry Christmas!)

p.s. Concise and precise answer, please.
