Question about modes & scales

Hey everyone!

I'm new to this forum and well new to the bass too... kinda.... been playing for a couple of months but it's been on and off cause of my crappy school schedule.

Anyway I have a question about practicing modes and scales. How do you guys practice them? I'm pretty clueless bout this. I've been reading books on music theory and stuff just to understand this aspect of music better and I think I have a rough idea of what it's all about. But I don't know how to apply it in practice.

Can anyone help me?

tons of them .. just google them .. some of them have to be paid for though .. google does wonders ... =)

If you are in a major key for example - C

The major scales are C D E F G A B C (221 2221)

You can practice the fingering of this scale.F=Fore, R=Ring finger, M= Middle, P= Pinky(FRFMPFRP)

If the song have chords like C F G C, the notes in the major scale can be use as passing notes like C (E F ) G (D) C

Chords in major scale - C Dm7 Em7 F G7 Am7 Bm7(b5) C

For a start, if you are not familiar with modes, can use pentatonic and chords to form your bassline loh.

For e.g. If you notice Dm(2nd chord) pentatonic is D F G A C D- these are the same notes in your C major scale

Basic chords is 1 3 5 - C chords = C E G

Explore major and minor scale than major and minor pentatonic.

The notes in major modes is the scale as major scale just start differently.

E.g - Dorian mode in Key of C

The notes are D E F G A B C D (like a D minor scale)

Yes pls google and read up more.

Can check out Bunny Brunel's books.

Cheers
