question about different ways of singing

I get an "access denied" message when I try to view those files.

You might want to try box.net, that's used a lot on the singing forums I visit.

Yep that works :)

Clip 1 I don't like .. it's pitchy and doesn't have much energy.

Clip 2 sounds better. It's more solid and pitching is better (I think due to the better technique). But it still sounds very small, not very powerful. It sounds very heady, like you are avoiding chest voice.

Clip 3 is chest voice - but it doesn't sound all that good. It doesn't have that freedom that a voice needs to sound great.

So it's not that any of your ways of singing are good or bad .. both chest and head are good. And it's great that you can use both already. You just need to develop them more and also combine them into one voice (using mixed voice inbetween). I would recommend getting a teacher to help you there.

If I had to choose between the clips I would choose #2.

That sounds to me like some another form of head voice. There's a whole lot of variations you can get by adjusting various muscles.

What is your goal?

But pitch and unwavering tone are both products of technique :) When he was using better technique (in clip 2) his pitching naturally improved.

As for what technique to use, I suggest trying speech level singing. It's both a technique and also a method to get you there.

What technique was he using? If I do recall he only mentioned singing "lightly", "with force", and with "normal voice".. and if clip 2 were the one to be "with force", it isn't a good technique, he's increasing his likelihood in straining his voice..

It's not easy to judge which is his chest or head voice yet, because it's going to be hard confirming his range by only his use of dynamic differences.

I didn't listen to the entire clip, and you could be right sage. I checked his range on the keyboard and if he is a tenor, clip 2 is right in the middle of that critical area at the top of chest voice. Up there it's possible to use a heady voice but it's very weak, especially on the lower notes.

So I still think he is using what I call "head voice" in clip 2. It's the voice you get if you start above the break and come down without adding any chest. Like what some female opera singers do. Any lower down and it fades into nothing, because only chest voice can function in the lower range.
