Problems with beat and tempo.

Hi everyone =D!.

Not sure if im posting this in the right section but ya.. I've been attendin singing lessons for lyk 3months now and my vocal teacher keeps telling me i have beat and tempo problems, which is true btw.

I cant seem to tell if a song is 4beat4, 3beat4 etc and even after i get the beat, my speed seems to be wrong. I will suddenly change speed for no reason.

I've been trying to search for ways to improve my beat and tempo but nothing is working. Slow songs make me wanna beat faster while fast songs makes me wanna beat slower.

Is there anyway to train speed and tempo? I even tried listenin to a metronome goin at a certain speed for half hr but apprently it din work =.="

Oh ya. Just some additional info.

I learned violin before but my beat at that time had issues still.

Also, wen i go karaoke and stuff and my frens make me listen to new songs, i tend to be able to predict (almost 100% accurately) wads the next work and the tune of the song even tho im not lookin at the screen and i never heard the song before. Im not sure how to explain it but it just happens.

So far that has only given me problems in terms of pitching where i tend to predict the song's tune and words and thus ignoring the pitch. or something lyk that o.0. I suspect this might also be the cause of my beat and tempo issues =/.

There's no easy wait out, u just have to practise more the correct way. It's actually good u know u're going faster or slower. that means that u have a sense of tempo, just that u're involuntarily singing faster or slower for some reason. practising more with a metronome or a backing track should help, but u must be aware not to speed up or slow down at all times.

Hmm. I tried to make sure i din go faster or slower. but the more i did that the worse it became =/. Somehow i sometimes get the fear i missed a beat or i pitched wrongly.

Ok i'll practise even more. thx =D!

okay this may sound weird.

to feel the groove, u have to move your body. once u got hold of the groove, ur unlikely to lose the tempo. could be anything, just tapping your feet or dancing.

also best u work with a metronome to start things off.

Oooooo

beats and tempo are important because if the song that you sing start wihout a music this will come in handly or a song in the middle without a music background comes in handly too... to check the tempo or a beat of the songs , do check the style of the song if you have the notes it will be even better, do some marking , check your time signutare and the symbols..~

my method of keeping in time is to nod my head + tap my right hand's fingers + both feet boppin at the same time.

right feet is to take note of the low beats like kick. etc left feet is to help my right feet keep time. and my right hand finger is to follow any "snare" (alternative beat to kick) and cymbals. and my head follows the tempo of my limbs + whatever I hear that's in the song's focus. like at this point maybe more on vocals, or just guitars alone, or maybe that song goes from straight into a swing, then the head nodding helps coordinate my limbs so none of "us" goes out of time... at least not much.

The way I learnt to keep time was to play along with the metronome (I was learning piano at the time), and adjust whenever I went out of time. After a while my mental view of time began matching up with the metronome.

So if you wanted to do the same, you would have the metronome going while you sing, and keep adjusting your speed as you go out of time.

If the song is too distracting you can sing scales in time to the metronome instead. Part of classical technical training for piano is to play scales with perfect timing and even volume.
