ok guys, as a recent seller of 13 hard disks. I got loads of questions regarding this. here's the 1st thing i wanna emphasize on taiji's comment. NO, MADE IN CHINA does not mean 160gb = 128gb. pls kindly don't mislead.
gr3y, highly likely you're using a non-servicepack 2 windows xp. cos as far as I know, windows xp servicepack 0 doesn't detect more than 130 gb or something like that. go download windows xp servicepack 2 to extend beyond that limit. because "iceskyz69" is using a 60gig hdd he doesn't have this problem wait till he gets one bigger than 130gig. (but if he's is servicepack 2 it doesn't matter)
as for file system, i can't remember too well but if i'm not wrong, FAT16 = 512mb or more, FAT32 (File Allocation Table) = 2gig or more. NTFS = 4 gig or more. you guys don't really have to worry about this. just stick with NTFS (New Technology File System) it's more stable. but if you really need to know, NTFS is only for those windows 98/2000/XP etc. doesn't recognise in windows 98 for you gamers. win98 only = fat32.
and finally the 3rd answer for your questions on why does (for example my new system's hdd) 160 gig hdd show 149.04gb only? and all 320 gig hard disks show as 298.09gig in windows xp only?
it's because 1024 b (bytes) = 1 kb (kilobytes). 1000 bytes DOES NOT equal to 1 kb.
and simlim (or anywhere else in the world) sells hard disk telling you it's a 320gigabyte, but it really isn't ! it's "320'000'000'000 bytes" hard disk.
confused? here we go, a little primary school maths :
320'000'000'000 bytes = (divided by 1024) = 312'500'000 kilobytes
312'500'000 kb = (divided by 1024) = 305'175.78 megabytes
305'175.78 mb = (divided by 1024) = guess what? ...
298.023223876953125 gigabytes! round off = 298.02 gb. and remember I mentioned my hard disk shows 298.09 gb inside Disk Management? so really, they are actually selling a 298.02gb hard disk. which ppl don't want to hear it as 298 cos it sounds so ugly, so they re-market as a "320'000'000'000 bytes" hard disk. in short. 320gb.
so for those who still don't get it. if I were to advertise a REAL 320gb hard disk for sale :
320 * 1024(mb) * 1024(kb) * 1024 (bytes) = 343597383680 byte hard disk. then it would have been advertised as a 340+gig hdd.
so gr3y = you download and install service pack 2 (it's about 220+mb it'll take you a while.).don't go there asking about this. i had bad experience with skylet before. they may just embarrass you. if after installing that. and it still doesn't show, then you may have some kinda hardware problemo here hehe. the URL is here :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
sofyan = your 1gig sd card is recognised as around 989 mb. so here we go.
1'000'000'000 bytes / 1024 (kb) / 1024 (mb) = 953.67431640625 mb. plug in your SD-Card , click Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc , scroll down and look at the drive your SDcard is assigned to. i'm sure it says around there. if it really does show 989. then your SDcard isn't 1'000'000'000 bytes , it's a little more than that. =)
one final thing that I will cover on is, for those of you who format freshly using NTFS. you'll realise 60mb (or so) of hdd space is actually taken up but it doesn't show what file takes up that. on a fresh formatted partition! if you ask me, I really don't know why, I just wanted to say that this is the "norm". haha. you can google search and find out if missing 60mb in NTFS mode really bothers you. i'm thinking it needs that to be "stable".
cheers.
99¢ worth.
