wats the difference between 500k and 256k?

can i differenhiate volume and tone knobs??

can i use vol as tone or tone as vol ?

poteniometer is variable resistor

500k and 256k, one is bigger in value then the other.

volume and tone pot usually vary in the taper, but they are still variable resistor

for volume, usually audio/log pot(indicated by letter A on the pot, either before or after the value) is use

for tone, usually linear pot(indicate by the letter B on the pot, either before or after the value) is use

If the pot has no letter, use a multi meter to check the value. On linear pot, turn the shaft to mid position and measure the value, you shud get half of the overall indicated value.

For audio/log pot, the response aint linear as you turn the shaft, with multimeter connected, as you turn the pot, you will see a slow gradual increment of the pot value, when it near the end of the turn, you will see a sudden increase.

Both type of pots can be interchanged for volume and tone, it will still work, but whether or not anyone like the response, thats another thing.

if the above sounds confusing, go thru the 3 links from below, its some really really useful info on pots

It should be the opposite way. B for Volume and A for Tone, most of the guitars are wired in such a way from the factory.

It is also ok to use like patheinraindrop said, end of the day is up to user preferences.

generally 500K is for humbuckers and 250k is for single coil. you can also use 500K for single coil but most people will find the sound to be too wide for their liking.

hmmm, just wondering, any idea why most geetar from factory are wired the opposite while the articles and diy people seem to have mentioned bout using log for volume?

From what i have tried, i actually prefer to have linear pot for the volume as well.

woah, fgl bro fgl, so early and "suaning" me already. How is your body? Feeling better i hope

erm.. linear pot is B and audio tapered is A. so correct lor..

linear pot is used for vol in most of the guitar from the factories because you will get a very balance cut off of vol signal when you turn down the pot.

players that do alot of vol swell will want to put A pot in vol because it cuts off the vol signal abruptly.

So it is really up to user preferences, no right and wrong.

wow bros.. didnt expected so many replies.. gimme a ^5..
im just a rookie in the rookie corner. haha
