I wanted to build a simple portable studio with acceptable quality, mainly doing instrumental rock, sentimental and symphony stuff.i will have a guitar with guitar effect proccesor, and a M-audio prokeys 88sx stage piano. What else do i need?

Hi there

What is the purpose of this "studio"? Is it for rehearsal or recording?

2/4 track handheld recorder like the Zoom H2 and H4.

8/16 tracks multitrack recorder like the Korg D888 or Zoom HD16CD

Computer based Digital Audio Workstation. You can use a desktop or notebook + audio interface to suit the kind of recording required.

What is your budget?

i m using my macbook as my DAW,i m not recording vocal, just guitar and midi. So beside audio interface, what else do i need?

since you have a macbook and plan to do sequencing while still being able to record guitar, a pair of headphone will be needed for monitoring ur playing. for the sounds, u can use garageband's sounds or the m-audio stage piano sounds.

It also depends how far do u wan to go. An audio interface isn't really important if u dun plan on spending a lot of money. R u juz strictly recording and sequencing or do u plan to do some mixing as well?

what is consider as a good monitoring headphone?any recommendation?
I don't know where to get those sound for midi, like drum,string...etc

darrenbkl : ok first of all, as you can see the questions james asked you have pretty much kicked in order as stated on my recording FAQ (I conveniently linked : http://tinyurl.com/diyrecording )

Recording Purpose > vocals/instrument > mic > preamp > soundcard > USB/Firewire/PCI > PC > DAW

your wants = genre : instrumental rock, sentimental and symphony stuff
your instruments = guitar (apparently with a processor you want a diversed range of clean to rock guitar sounds I assume) and piano . no vox nothing else.
your planned setup = midi for your piano, and guitar input DI recording.
your expectations = acceptable quality. (this one you'll need to learn mixing. raw recordings won't come out magic on their own unless you own some serious pieces of gear)
your budget = not stated, but i'm guessing you haven't struck bigsweep yet.

this in mind now it looks like this :
For Recording your compositions > guitar (DI) /piano (midi) > none > ? (Preamp) > ? (soundcard/audiointerface) > ? (does your macbook have firewire?) > Mac > ? (probably garageband)

I see for a good start you got a pretty nice midi controller there which has USB connectivity to function as a midi controller in your DAW right? so now for the guitars, if you're not looking to spend much, I believe Line6 Toneport UX1 will suffice. (remember that toneport UX1 only supports Dynamic mics, so in case you're considering to record vocals in future with a condenser, you might wanna opt for UX2 at least) reason why I suggested toneport UX cos it's got an inbuilt guitar processor and lots of Softies have it! I'm not a fan of guitar processors, more of a mic up guy , so I got what james recommended the Zoom H4 and D888, but planning to sell off to upgrade soon.

Monitors, because you're recording Midi and Guitar DI processors, you will have no need to worry about "microphone bleed" , you don't have to "isolate your monitoring sound away from the microphones" . i'm sure you have decent comfortable pc speakers to work with.
but if you want headphones my vote is with this : Audio Technica M30fs , available at simlim hungbrothers , website is www.hungbros.com DO NOT key in "brothers" lol.. I'm at work and it turned out to be a porn site when I spelt it fully..
cheap , good, long cable cord, great sound isolation, nice lows, the mid scoop is deceiving for mixing the mids. long reliability.

villanovajunction : thanks haha. i wouldn't call it wisdom la.. more like "tried'n'tested experience". le experience ..

Nice post man!

For Recording your compositions > guitar (DI) /piano (midi) > none > ? (Preamp) > ? (soundcard/audiointerface) > ? (does your macbook have firewire?) > Mac > ? (probably garageband)

A preamp? My Boss GT-8 can be consider as a preamp?
My macbook does has firewire port.
Garageband you're right.

For an audio interface, does the Hi-Z input important for recording guitar?
Then how about the library for midi?

Guitar > Boss GT8 > (headphones output / mono out) > ? Audio interface
For Recording your compositions > guitar (DI) /piano (midi) > none > > ? (soundcard/audiointerface) > USB/Firewire > Macbook > Garage Band DAW
>A preamp? My Boss GT-8 can be consider as a preamp?
yes
>My macbook does has firewire port.
doesn't matter now unless you're going for a firewire interface like presonus firebox.

>For an audio interface, does the Hi-Z input important for recording guitar?
errr but if you're plugging into a GT8 first it shouldn't matter..

>Then how about the library for midi?
buy from ebay??

Garageband has its own library which u can use. And also its jampacks. look for them at macshop in funan.
